Interview with Cate Von Csoke

Cate Von Csoke

In this interview spotlight, I chat with Cate Von Csoke about her latest project, challenges, technology and more.

Full Q&A along with links and music below.

Listen on Spotify.

Where are you from and what style of music do you create? (In your own words, not necessarily in marketing terms or by popular genre classifications.)

I’m from Sydney Australia, now based in Brooklyn, New York and I make dreamy psych music. Lyrically, I like to write in a poetic form, anchoring the sound with hypnotic vocals and fuzz guitar.

What led you down this path of music and what motivates you to stay the course?

I was born into a musical family and was always in love with singing and playing guitar and piano. When I left Australia for a new life in New York, it was a very inspiring time and that set the course to write and record this album.

How is your new release different than previous ones? Did you set out to accomplish anything specific?

Dream Around is the second single from my debut album, Almoon—a collection of eight introspective songs created to transport the listener into a dreamscape of the desert at night or an old western or noir film.

Do you face any challenges as an indie musician in a digital age? On the flip side, how has technology helped you (if it has)?

Technology is a mixed blessing. In these unprecedented times when our basic need for companionship is challenged it’s an extremely useful tool for keeping us connected. As a musician, the music world has never been so accessible for artists and their audience and it’s been inspiring to see how we’ve adapted. Sharing music with the world is a blessing. F Scott Fitzgerald says it best, “That is part of the beauty of all literature. You discover that your longings are universal longings, that you’re not lonely and isolated from anyone. You belong.”
