Interview with Chloé Caroline – Messy

by Joshua (J.Smo) Smotherman August 4, 2019 11:17 am Tagged With: indie pop, Pop, singer, songwriter

Chloe Caroline

In this interview spotlight, I chat with Chloé Caroline about her latest release, motivations, challenges and more.

Full Q&A along with links and music below.

Let’s dive a little deeper into You, the artist and your music. What attracted you to this genre(s) or style(s)?

The honesty and the freedom that it brings. With pop these days, the lines are all blurred genre-wise so it gives me the opportunity to blend some of my favorite old school influences with 2019 and get to be bold with my lyrics. I have always been attracted to music with intention and mixing the organic with some more processed sounds gives a fresh take of something that’s still real. It just hits me more.

What led you into this journey with music? And further, what drives you to push it out to the public?

I have always really been in touch with music, ever since I was a toddler Its been part of what soothes my soul. Always singing around the house, finding melodies and lyrics in everything. I was also lucky to be introduced to a variety of genres at a young age. It’s my way to create art and share some truth and i get to create community because of being vulnerable, I want nobody to ever feel alone.

Who or what influences your creativity? Have your tastes in music changed over time?

My environment as a whole for sure—nature, and stories (mine and other peoples). Exposure to music of all sorts inspires me too. I think my tastes have just expanded really but for the most part always link back to music of the 70s and music from the late 90s/early 2000s when female artists reigned and were authentic as hell. I live for a great funky groove, intrinsically catchy melodies (almost always with some sort of dreaminess or melancholy vibe) and a super personal/unique sounding vocal.

Were you trying to accomplish anything specific on this new project? Creatively or otherwise?

YES. This project for me was a stepping stone into the woman Chloé. I really found myself and grew SO much during this process. I got to be incredibly hands on and specific in every aspect from the songwriting to production to how the vocal was cut. I wanted people to see who I really was and give them something fresh by introducing them to a new sound that combines aspects of all of my influences and shows a deeper side to my story.

What was the last song you listened to?

My own actually (called You Don’t Love), just left the studio in Thailand this evening working on the next project!! But aside from my own music—‘My Way’ by Frank Sinatra.

Which do you prefer? Vinyl? CDs? MP3s?

VINYL of course! I’m an old soul if you haven’t picked up on what I’m writing down!!

How about this one…. Do you prefer Spotify? Apple Music? Bandcamp? Or something else? Why?

I have to admit I’m still the outlier who will buy a song on iTunes if I really dig it to support, but otherwise I’d say Spotify or Youtube actually because I always stumble across throwback songs I’ve completely forgotten about.

Other than the digital era overwhelming us with access to an abundance of music, what is the biggest challenge you face when trying to connect with or find new fans?

Honestly, it’s remembering to not give a crap about being “cool” in order to gain popularity. I think authenticity is cool but I’m very aware it’s a hell of a lot easier to post a picture in a bikini and get a ton of likes. So for me its throwing that out the window and telling myself that the fans I have made have been drawn to me because of the approachable realness I try to put out there. If one day it’s a bikini pic, great, but the next day it might be music related and it might get half the amount of exposure at first but screw it. I want the people who are there to really connect and be there for the right reasons even if it takes longer to to break through the clutter.
