Toronto-based singer, rapper, songwriter, and producer Cubanbrown unveils his new EP, Ready for Change, led by the smooth, groove-soaked single “Deep Pyar.” Seamlessly blending Toronto hiphop with Desi influences and multilingual lyricism, the project captures the heartbeat of the city’s South Asian diaspora. Built on English, Urdu, Punjabi, and Haryanvi, the songs explore connection, authenticity, self-love, and the power of deep-rooted cultural identity.
Throughout Ready for Change, Cubanbrown showcases the many sounds of Toronto’s Desi hiphop movement. Each track serves as a vibrant expression of identity and evolution. “Toronto is the most multicultural city in the world, and this is sonically reflected in this project,” he says. “It’s beats inspired by Toronto hiphop, meeting multilingual songwriting that represents South Asians here.”
Produced by Toronto’s Hunnabeats, the EP’s lead single, “Deep Pyar,” sets a lush, underwater vibe from the first beat, laying the groundwork for Cubanbrown‘s romantic bars about the kind of love that runs deeper than oceans. “It’s about expressing the weight of true love,” he says. “Not lust, but the real deal – that ‘Deep Pyar.'”
From lines like “your love is so deep, deeper than a river or a sea” to playful metaphors like “next to you honey isn’t sweet, cuz you’re my favourite treat,” the track is a heartfelt, catchy tribute to love in its richest form. Brij Beniwal‘s feature brings buttery Haryanvi melodies, while Cubanbrown weaves English and Urdu throughout, all culminating in a final chorus lifted by Jersey kicks for an unforgettable finish.
- What can you share with readers about your new project?
Toronto is the most multicultural city in the world and for many years has been shaping mainstream hip hop, pop and RnB. Today that legacy continues to evolve to include the sounds of the international diaspora of the world. This project “Ready for Change” is a brief example of today’s Toronto Desi Hip Hop. A fusion of South Asian musical cultures and Hip Hop, in addition to multi-lingual flows that can resonate with listeners from Mumbai to California. - How does this release compare with your other projects you had in the past?
This release is a three song EP whose beats are all produced by Kasurlaprod and Hunnbeats, which gives the project a cohesive feeling. The collaborations on the project add flows and songwriting in Punjabi and Haryanvi which really accurately reflects the increasing size of the hip hop music industry in those respective markets. Compared to past Cubanbown projects, this time I lean into rapping and combining English with Urdu creating an even smoother fusion. - What about this single makes you most proud?
When you listen to this record, I literally imagine scenes of my beautiful city, people dancing, vibing and it just makes me feel good to listen to. I’m most proud of the fact that the intention of this project comes from a pure love for the game and it’s really reflected in the feeling of the record. This isn’t about flexing or posturing, just enjoy discovering the many bounties life has to offer. - Was there a specific goal you were trying to accomplish with this release?
I really want this release to be the focal point of my show I’m doing on August 31st in Toronto. For the first time having a project coincide with a performance, feels like an overall better rollout as an artist entrepreneur. I hope this project is able to reach people in other parts of the world I never imagined. At the end of the day the goal is for the vibe to connect with people and spread some love in the world. - What inspires you to create music? What motivates you to keep going?
I feel like I’ve fell in love with the vision and reality of being an independent artist. At the end of the days its such a blessing to actually risk it all and pursue your dreams, we only have one life to live and through music I find I’m able to contribute my part to making the world a better place. The world is full of distractions, fast food style music that promotes violence and greed, I’m here to add more noise to those preaching love. I feel like we are really building something that one day will be impactful, I hope and believe one day when you hear my tag “CUUUBANNNBROOWN” it puts a smile on your face, that’s all. - If you could collaborate with anyone – dead or alive, famous or unknown – who would it be and why? If it’s an indie/DIY artist, please include a link so readers can check them out.
I would love to collab with Puerto Rican singer Ozuna. As someone who’s music has been inspiring me for years, it would lead to something incredible. His Latin Urbano melodies combined with my Desi Hip Hop production would sound incredible. The South Asian scene still hasn’t experienced the proper fusion of DHH and Reggaeton, but Cubanbrown is on a mission to bring that sound to life. - What was the last song you listened to? Favorite all-time bands/artists?
I was just listening to the Pakistani hit song Pal Pal by Afusic. The incredible songwriting on that sound is such a vibe with that chill beat. Some of my favorite all time artists are Chencho Corleone, Bad Bunny, Frank Ocean and Majid Jordan.
