Interview with Gypsy Circus – Holy Lights and Shadows

by Joshua (J.Smo) Smotherman February 1, 2019 4:17 pm Tagged With: alternative rock, blues rock, indie rock, Rock, Scotland, United Kingdom

Gypsy Circus

Edinburgh-based quartet Gypsy Circus blast into 2019 with the release of their vivacious new EP, Holy Lights And Shadows, out February 8th, 2019.

Opening with title track and lead single Holy Lights And Shadows, jangling indie hooks are combined with a classic rock feel to create a sound akin to the likes of Biffy Clyro or 3 Doors Down. Hard-hitting riffs are out in full force, with frontman Aaron King’s warm, husky vocals becoming increasingly determined and full of emotion and power throughout. Talking about EP, the band elaborate, “the theme that runs through the tracks is awareness. Knowing what you want, not following an agenda that does not work for you and being more in touch with nature/yourself. We know how easy it is to get into the habit of doing something or having a routine that you want to change. Making the initial change might be difficult but it will be worth it in the long run.” Throughout the EP, Gypsy Circus blend elements of blues, classic rock and indie rock to create a sound that is truly their own.

In this interview spotlight, I chat with Gypsy Circus about the latest project, motivations, challenges and more.

Full Q&A along with links and music below.

Let’s dive a little deeper into You, the artist and your music. What attracted you to this genre(s) or style(s)?

Everyone in the band likes blues and rock as well as indie. We combined all of these genres and came up with our sound!

What led you into this journey with music? And further, what drives you to push it out to the public?

To start with we just wanted to make music we liked. Once we had written, practiced and recorded the songs, it was too big a process to not share them. Once you get a couple of positive responses you want to keep bringing out new material.

Who or what influences your creativity? Have your tastes in music changed over time?

The band sort of feeds off each other and ideas bounce back and forward. We are influenced by good music, no matter the genre!

We seem to be getting more polished and less grungy as time goes on.

Were you trying to accomplish anything specific on this new project? Creatively or otherwise?

We spent more time in pre production trying to get the tunes just right. When the band writes a new song, even if we have only played it a few times, we get attached to ideas within the tune. This time round we tried more options so that that every avenue was explored.

What was the last song you listened to?

Albert king – born under a bad sign

Which do you prefer? Vinyl? CDs? MP3s?

All have their pros and cons. Vinyls look and sound cool but are expensive. CDs can be played in a car but are not as cool as vinyl. MP3s don’t take up any space in the house but how will people know what music you like when they come round?

How about this one…. Do you prefer Spotify? Apple Music? Bandcamp? Or something else? Why?

I like the one where the artist get fair payment for their music being consumed.

Other than the digital era overwhelming us with access to an abundance of music, what is the biggest challenge you face when trying to connect with or find new fans?

Just trying to stay relevant is hard. There is a crazy amount of information constantly getting fired at people all the time! You have to make a really good impression to be remembered. Although you can still make something great and it can slip through the cracks, which is unfortunate.

Where is the best place to connect with you online? Discover more music?

The usual suspects – facebook , instagram, etc. Come to our shows and speak to us after! Thats is the best way to connect with us!

Anything else you’d like to add before signing off?

Check out our new stuff when it comes out! Thanks for speaking with us!
