Interview with Isa Marina – No Grey

by Joshua (J.Smo) Smotherman November 7, 2018 8:58 am Tagged With: latin, New York City, Pop, R&B, Soul, United States, urban

Isa Marina

Where are you from and what style music do you create? (In your own words, not necessarily in marketing terms or by popular genre classifications.)

My name is Isa Marina and I’m from the Bronx, New York. In my own words, I can describe my music as a dreamy fusion of Pop, R&B, and Latin music stylings. In other words, Rhythmic music.

What led you down this path of music and what motivates you to stay the course?

What led me down this path was my own journey of truly coming into my own and standing firm in who I am. I took influences from my childhood, upbringing and culture, along with the R&B and Pop music that I love, and fused it. I feel like I’ve been able to formulate my own lane where vocals and lyrics are still a focal point, but with a rhythmic movement that makes audiences want to get up and dance.

How is “No Grey” different than previous releases? Did you set out to accomplish anything specific?

This release means everything to me. It’s a true reflection of who I am as an artist and a great sneak peek into what’s to come from me. My primary goal with this release was to showcase the fact that I finally found my own sound and lane.

Do you face challenges as an indie musician in a digital age? How has technology helped you (assuming it helps)?

The challenges are endless in the digital age! But if one is strategic, these challenges can always be overcome. I’ve had many “day jobs” within the digital advertising world. Those experiences have really helped me really understand, in depth, how advertising in a digital world works, how to target key audiences and cater to my own audience, as well as understanding algorithms, audience patterns, etc. This in turned has helped me better market and brand myself.
