Interview: John Muirhead

by Leslie Sherman October 22, 2025 2:56 pm

Toronto-based troubadour John Muirhead returns with his anticipated new album, The Nomad, alongside the lead single, “Everything, Everywhere.” A record rooted in the restless beauty of “inbetween-ness,” The Nomad captures Muirhead‘s reflections on love, heartbreak, wanderlust, homesickness, nostalgia, and self-discovery. “These in-betweens are where we ask big questions and begin to really understand ourselves,” Muirhead says.

Recorded at Echo Plant Studio in Port Coquitlam, BC with producer Ryan Worsley (Dear Rouge, Luca Fogale, MONOWHALES), the album sees Muirhead stepping into his most mature songwriting yet. With contributions from close collaborators including Jon Bryant and Zach Zanardo, The Nomad is both expansive and intimate – a meditation on chasing dreams while longing for stability.

The lead single, “Everything, Everywhere,” co-written with Ryan Worsley and Jon Bryant over Zoom, is a cathartic exploration of love’s lasting tether – the way a person inhabits every corner of your life, in joy and in grief.

What can you share with readers about your new project?

The Nomad
is my second LP and I’m incredibly proud of it. The songs revolve around the theme of ‘in-betweenness’ I’ve felt throughout my mid-twenties – feeling/wanting multiple things at the same time. Wanting love but also wanting freedom, wanting adventure but also wanting security, etc. I recorded the record in Port Coquitlam, BC with producer Ryan Worsley.

How does this release compare with your other projects you had in the past?

What makes this album great, in my opinion, is collaboration. Previous releases have been solo writes – meaning I wrote all of the songs alone in my bedroom. For this record, I was fortunate to collaborate with some amazing writers including Simon Ward (Strumbellas), Jon Bryant, Michigander, and more. Through the experience of writing with these talented writers, I learned a lot about myself and my writing style.

What about this single makes you most proud?

I’m really proud of the lyrics on Everything, Everywhere.  I set out to describe a difficult topic – not a love song, but not a break up song…a song that describes the feeling of being intertwined with someone on both sides of a relationship. To me, if feels like it captures that perfectly.

Was there a specific goal you were trying to accomplish with this release?

My goal was simply to create something great and leave no stone unturned. Sometimes, that meant re-recording songs or vocal parts after the fact, diving deep into the production and arrangement of the songs. While it took a lot of work, I can confidently say we did that.

What inspires you to create music? What motivates you to keep going?

The community that’s building around my music keeps me inspired and motivated. There are so many amazing fans and friends around the world who connect with this music. The messages I get and the conversations I have at the merch table on tour consistently leave me speechless.

If you could collaborate with anyone – dead or alive, famous or unknown – who would it be and why? If it’s an indie/DIY artist, please include a link so readers can check them out.

I would love to collaborate with Neil Young. My dad is a huge fan and I grew up listening to his CDs on repeat in the car. I’d love to sit in and see his writing process and sing with him.

What was the last song you listened to? Favorite all-time bands/artists?

Currently I’m on tour across Canada, and every single morning we listen to ‘On The Road Again’, so that was the last song I listened to, haha.
I’ve been obsessing over Michigander’s self-titled album as well – I was lucky to collaborate with Jason on track one of the new record, Don’t Mind.

Where is the best place to find you and stay connected?

I recommend connecting with me on Instagram, TikTok and Discord!

  • I really appreciate your time. Is there anything you’d like to share before we sign off?

I want to invite every reader to follow me on socials and join our growing community. On this tour I’ve seen so many amazing things…people traveling to shows, meetups, and true friendships forming through this music. All are welcome!!
