From a beach hut in Thailand to the wooded trails of Cape Breton, Nova Scotia, “Walk Right Through” is Jont‘s latest transmission from the deeper currents of human experience – a contemplative, harmony-soaked track that feels both ancient and modern, gentle and unflinching.
The inspiration that Jont experienced during his time in Thailand was more than just a song – it was a narrative wrapped in archetype and poetry.
“A story of a son and a father, of a truth so radical it’s banned by society, of the desire to sing that truth despite everything,” he explains. “It’s a photographic story if you want to see it. But more than that, it’s a felt experience – melodic, harmonic, trance-like. The lyrics are there, but the real message is in the feeling.”
At the heart of the track lies a chorus that offers a kind of spiritual reassurance:
“Nothing’s ever gonna get you / nothing’s ever gonna blow you out / no-one loves you like I love you / you’re the me that is all around.”
“I have goosebumps as I type these words,” Jont admits. “Perhaps I’ve never felt prouder of a song than this one. Or maybe I mean grateful.”
“Walk Right Through” lands as a personal and artistic high point – not only for its musicality, but for the clarity with which it affirms Jont‘s role in this world.
“We are the ones who bring the songs,” he says. “Thousands that may disappear without trace. But one or two get through. One or two, 50, 60, 80 years later, will still be alive in people’s hearts. We do this for those who are not here yet.”
- What can you share with readers about your new project?
By projects do you mean, the band? Jont & The Fish? Or the new single? If you mean the band, well it’s a tight little unit – just three of us that play together live, and two of them are Halifax born and bred, and I’m “from away” as they say up here in Cape Breton…. and we recorded an album last year straight away after putting the band together….the songs came through and it just felt right to go record and this track is one of the deepest cuts.
How does this release compare with your other projects you had in the
- past?
Ah. I see you mean. The project you speak of is the single. Well, it’s slower than the others. But like some of the others it’s a song about a song. And there’s a catchy chorus that has a deep meaning to it which kind of holds the attention. It’s not really the sort of song you’d imagine would be a single, but it’s a stand out track, so we had to put it out. A lot of people who hear the new songs point this one out as their favourite.
- What about this single makes you most proud?
This was an epic recording to finish. We worked and worked at it. Re-did the drums and organ. Changed the structure. Added back ups just before mastering. Then added the sax solo. If it wasn’t for the sax solo I’d say the lyrics and vocal performance would make me most proud but wow, David Christensen just nailed the solo. I’ve always loved the sax solo at the end of Walk on the wild side by Lou Reed and I feel this has an indispensable and instantly memorable quality to it like that one does.
- Was there a specific goal you were trying to accomplish with this release?
No. Same goal every time: Put some effort into sharing the joy of these recordings with the world rather than just putting all the effort into writing them and recording them which can be tempting.
- What inspires you to create music? What motivates you to keep going?
If you’ve ever had a really good song flow through you this is not something you ever need to question.
- If you could collaborate with anyone – dead or alive, famous or unknown – who would it be and why? If it’s an indie/DIY artist, please include a link so readers can check them out.
Well, Bowie of course! I mean presumably you meant “apart from Bowie”….. Apart from Bowie? Hmmmm. I dunno, maybe like a tennis player or someone, or a film star? Jim Carrey! Yeah I’d like to write a song with Jim Carrey.
- What was the last song you listened to? Favorite all-time bands/artists?
Wolf Alice, The Sofa. I heard it on 6 Music and fortunately they have a memorable name so I looked it up and it’s a really good song.
- Where is the best place to find you and stay connected?
Good question. The real answer is joining the mailing list on my website and then subscribing to my YT channel and following me on Instagram. But no-one’s gonna do that. So if you like the song, just add it to your library and maybe one day you’ll go check out my other 10 or so albums…
- I really appreciate your time. Is there anything you’d like to share before we sign off?
Nothing’s ever gonna get you. Nothing’s ever gonna blow you out. No-one loves you like I love you. And finally: You’re the me that is all around.
