Interview: Kari Lyn

by Leslie Sherman May 26, 2026 12:38 pm

Self-proclaimed cottage core rockstar Kari Lyn unveils “Killing Time (the Fish Song),” a hopeful, theatrical folk-country rocker that marks the beginning of a brand new era. The first single from an upcoming six-song EP, the track embraces spontaneity, adventure, and the joy found in life’s in-between moments. Equal parts playful and reflective, “Killing Time (the Fish Song)” feels like driving into the sunset with the windows down; cinematic, pulsing, full of possibility.

The song was written during a summer spent back in Kari Lyn’s hometown of North Rustico, PEI, where she challenged herself to write as much as possible while soaking in the fresh air, familiar landscapes, and temporary freedom from day-to-day work. “I believe I finished 11 songs that summer that I was willing to share,” she explains. “Killing Time (the Fish Song)” was one of them. Being home stirred deeper reflection too. “I was thinking about how proud little Kari Lyn would be and how I’ve become someone she would have looked up to.”

What can you share with readers about your new project?
Killing Time is a concept I’ve been culturing for a long time: in my life and shown through my music. It’s all about the moments in between, the moments that you aren’t quite paying attention to but tend to be when the most important moments happen.

How does this release compare with your other projects you had in the past?
I think it’s a lot more fun. This whole EP is just about trusting myself and bringing out my personality. When I first met with Devon, my producer on this project, we were talking about my other recent releases and how he loved them and loved the sound but he knew me to be so much happier and upbeat then the songs I was putting out. So with this new music we wanted to bring that out. I love getting the crowd moving and grooving so these songs reflect that.

What about this single makes you most proud?
I just love how much fun I had making it and the amazing people involved in it. I’m also so proud of the feedback I’ve gotten so far, and I’m proud of myself for finally taking the plunge and creating this EP.

Was there a specific goal you were trying to accomplish with this release?
Killing Time (the fish song) is the first of 6 songs released under this EP of the same name. This song is to set the scene and bring you into the world of Killing Time and Kari Lyn music. Killing Time is the moments “in between”: picture sitting on a dock with a beer in hand or fishing in the lake on the boat, sitting in the park with your friends or starting a new journey, (while blasting this song). It’s every small “insignificant” moment that leads to the bigger picture: when you are discovering who you are and becoming your best self.

What inspires you to create music? What motivates you to keep going?
I’ve been around music my whole life, growing up in an Acadian town in the East Coast, home of kitchen parties and ceilidhs, but it wasn’t until I left my hometown and started traveling the world that I really started getting inspired to write music and realized that music is all I really want to do. And through “Killing Time” I realized that life is too short to do anything except what you love so I may as well follow my dreams.

If you could collaborate with anyone – dead or alive, famous or unknown – who would it be and why? If it’s an indie/DIY artist, please include a link so readers can check them out.
I think I would have to pick Shania Twain, she is such a Canadian bad ass country icon and I feel like a lot of my new music reflects her vibe. She puts on such a no worries, fun, but still dramatic show that I am absolutely obsessed with.

What was the last song you listened to? Favorite all-time bands/artists?
The last song I listened to was Cosmos by Zinadelphia. She is so great, I love her new album The Boutique and how everything fits together.
Some of my all-time favourites are Kacey Musgraves. I’ve been a fan from the early days, I think her album Slow Burn was the soundtrack for a lot of my early travels, but I’ve also been obsessed with her new tune Dry Spell.
Chris Stapleton, was the first artist I ever paid full price for a vinyl, anything he puts out just makes me want to melt until Raye whose new album is so groundbreaking upon listening to only the first few tracks I RAN to the record store and bought it.

Where is the best place to find you and stay connected?
Any social media really, I try to be active on Instagram, Tiktok, Youtube and Facebook! @karilynmusic

I really appreciate your time. Is there anything you’d like to share before we sign off?
Just thank you so much for taking the time to learn about Killing Time, and make sure to follow along because I’m always dropping fun hints as to what’s coming next, and exclusive content for anyone who figures it out.
