Interview with Kendall Rucks

by Joshua (J.Smo) Smotherman May 15, 2019 8:25 am Tagged With: alternative rock, indie, singer, songwriter

Kendall Rucks

In this interview spotlight, I chat with Kendall Rucks about her music, Los Angeles, her dream tour and the future of independent music.

Full Q&A along with links and music below.

Tell us a more about your new music.

Hmmm I love to say it’s like Alice in Wonderland meets Gotham City. A dark perspective from an innocent pov. There are lots of rock elements over an overall dark pop feel

Where are you from and are you loving LA?

I’m from a small town in south Florida very different then the big city, it’s super friendly and a great place to grow up but LA is where I feel electrified – the artistic energy flows in the air…I LOVE it.

When did you know music was going to be you passion?

I was singing as a baby long before I knew what I was singing and there are videos of me at 2 or 3 singing “Get This Party Started” by Pink at my sisters birthday party lol! In school, I would get in trouble for humming and singing in class (I honestly didn’t even know I was doing it!) For me, I think I just always saw my destiny as musical and so that has just always been my thing.

What memorable responses have you had from your audiences?

Very drunk people can either be the best or the worst audience. There were two drunk women at one of my gigs at The House Of Blues. At HOB there is no stage just an open space, so with every song these two women were getting closer and closer to me. By the end of my set, I was singing this really emotional song with two drunk women attached on both my arms like a pimp. Hahaha

What would be your dream musical TOUR to go on?

A summer tour in Europe! Performing in outdoor arenas in a flowing white dress on a lineup of talented artists. Opening for Fiona Apple would be perfect!

How do you see the future of independent music?

At the top! I think independent music is where the trends and innovations are happening – many traditional labels have become stagnate and have lost the pursuit of quality artists in favor of social media flavors of the month. They’ve become trend followers instead of trendsetters. Independent music is the wild west of ideas and sounds which is exciting for true music lovers.

What are you most looking forward to in the rest of 2019?

I’m releasing my first single off my album this summer – I can’t wait!!! It’s been a long time coming and it’s gonna be EPIC!
