Interview with Lady Jane’s Revenge – Pure

by Joshua (J.Smo) Smotherman April 17, 2019 11:33 am Tagged With: alternative rock, Rock, United Kingdom

Where are you from and what style of music do you create? (In your own words, not necessarily in marketing terms or by popular genre classifications.)

Thank you for having us! We are a unique Rock/Alternative Band called ‘Lady Jane’s Revenge’ for fans of ‘The Used, Incubus, Faith No More..’ and located in South-West, UK .

We tend to create music based on feeling in that moment or resonating with what our spirit is throwing down mood wise at that specific time. . We hold values to hopefully motivate and create awareness and thought in our listeners minds, to trust their moral instinct when it comes to living day by day.

What led you down this path of music and what motivates you to keep going?

I think it must be similar for most musicians and artists, in that music is addictive and exciting! We’ve all been obsessed with music of all eras and genre from young ages, and it even feels that this is a skill we have become better at, as opposed to the more usual “important” craftsmanship and cumbersome jobs that are held up in more light, and probably rightly so they should… But we are entertainers, and everyone welcomes some of that in their down time.

We are natural class clowns haha.

How is this new release different than previous ones? Were you trying to accomplish anything specific?

This release has been a long time coming to be fair, but we also had a similar duration between our Debut ‘1554’ EP and follow up ‘Self-Titled’ EP.

We have a second guitarist, Adam on this track, who joined about 9 months ago in July 2018, and that has really added to our sound, having that extra thickness and rhythm going on, as-well as on stage feels very much like a new beginning for us. Our recording process has been opposite on this occasion.. In the past everything we recorded was done in a studio environment alongside a producer of significant experience, but we had realised paying for that experience left us limited in terms of promoting the final masterpiece, and so decided we would put our guitarist Sam, to the test and let him put his university skills in music production to good use, and we feel he did a stellar job!!

Name one or two challenges you face as an indie musician in this oversaturated, digital music age? How has technology helped you (since we know it does help)?

Our biggest challenge personally has been booking or getting shows, there are so many more bands, now that it’s easier to setup a Facebook page, and not physically have to poster and flyer everywhere and put actual footwork in like the old days. This allows contact with promoters to become easier and competition for slots much larger, the amount of bands we have seen in our four years, mutually friend a promoter and take the best shows and then breakup is ridiculous. The stalwarts then still don’t get a look in, when those specific musicians get bored and comeback with another project and get the good slots again due to history with the promoters before.

A positive to technology is being able to spread the music easier, and tracking the data from listeners and their locations, age, gender and preferred songs. Aswell as engaging with everyone effortlessly through it, which is great.

What was the last song you listened to?

My partner was listening to ‘The Beatles’ while cooking.. Now I’m probably gonna piss off a few people here haha, but I’m not a fan of them personally, I lent more towards ‘The kinks’ if I had to choose from similar artists, but very fortunately she had a cluster of the songs of theirs I could appreciate playing. Couldn’t tell you the names though, my memories getting very foggy lol.

Which do you prefer? Vinyl? CDs? MP3s?

Ash, our drummer is very much still a CD man.. if it’s the right band or album, he still loves the feel of reading the booklet and all the content supplied in a physical case. Whereas the rest of us are more than happy to throw on a playlist or album via streaming and get lost in day to day life, MP3 is the highest sound quality you can get for audio, and we love it loud!

How about this one…. Do you prefer Spotify? Apple Music? Bandcamp? Or something else? Why?

As a band we have all embraced the move to streaming sites keenly! Being able to plug in and play anything in a split second on our busy schedules is very ideal, I remember carrying around a Walkman and bag of cassettes in the 90’s and then portable CD versions thereafter, things really changed when Sony introduced music onto phones, for sure. Not to mention the extra space we can have in the home, and it’s proven popular when sharing Spotify or Apple Music around the van on tour hahaha.

Where is the best place to connect with you online and discover more music?

Usually our strongest platforms for engagement are via Facebook & Instagram, where you can find us under ‘Lady Jane’s Revenge’. Our fan base tend to use these most, and we are always very open to connecting with everyone that reacts with us! We do have a Twitter account also, and if in any doubts to finding us, all links are on our website www.ladyjanesrevenge.com.

Fortunately we work with AWAL for distribution of our music to all major stores & streaming sites.

Anything else before we sign off?

We Just want to say thank you so much for interviewing us, and to everyone who kindly read through this also! We hope you will check out our New Single/Video ‘Pure’ and come find us, if you enjoy it. Much Love to all.
