Canadian indie alt-pop artist Maddy Little returns with “Quicksand,” a quietly devastating reflection on self-doubt, overthinking, and the slow realization that someone you love is already halfway gone. Rather than capturing the explosion of a breakup, the song sits inside the moment before it happens when distance grows, communication fades, and blame turns inward.
Written during a period of emotional uncertainty, “Quicksand” explores the feeling of watching a relationship slip away while questioning your own worth. “I wrote this song about watching someone I loved slowly pull away and constantly blaming myself for it,” Little explains. The title reflects that emotional state — being stuck in patterns that feel impossible to escape. “Quicksand is so hard to escape once you’re in it. I kept having these thoughts about whether I was enough for this person. It felt like an emotional quicksand.”
- What can you share with readers about your new project?
This project is something I’ve been working on for a while and I feel like I finally found the sound that I want to represent me as an artist. - How does this release compare with your other projects you had in the past?
I think in the past, I wasn’t fully sure of where I wanted to take my music and the sound I wanted, where this project is very consistent with the overall sound and I feel like I finally found myself in my music. - What about this single makes you most proud?
This is the first song that started the sound for the EP. I wrote this song and recorded it about two years ago and since then I’ve learn so much about how I want to represent myself as an artist. - Was there a specific goal you were trying to accomplish with this release?
I think like most artists I want my music to be relatable to people and for them to feel like they are not alone in what they are going through. - What inspires you to create music? What motivates you to keep going?
I write my music a lot on experience and when I’m feeling like I can’t communicate with words and I think what keeps me motivated is that it keeps me sane and grounded. - If you could collaborate with anyone – dead or alive, famous or unknown – who would it be and why? If it’s an indie/DIY artist, please include a link so readers can check them out.
I think someone who I would love to collaborate with is Dallas Greene from city and color. He’s been a big inspiration for me ever since I was a kid and finding his music really made me inspired. - What was the last song you listened to?
shotgun – Soccer Mommy
- Favorite all-time bands/artists?
A band called Dizzy, City and Colour, and Medium Build are definitely in my top 10. - Where is the best place to find you and stay connected?
My Instagram – MaddyLittleMusic - I really appreciate your time. Is there anything you’d like to share before we sign off?
Thank you so much for having me.
