Interview: Moh Flow

by Leslie Sherman July 5, 2023 3:24 pm Tagged With: singer, songwriter

Hailing from Dubai, Moh Flow‘s talents have caught the attention of major media outlets such as GQ and EuroNews, who have praised his distinctive style and remarkable ability to connect with his audience. Collaborations with renowned artists like Pusha T & Serious Klein have further solidified his position as a rising star to watch.

An outspoken advocate for regional artists, he has opened up conversations about the challenges they face in a rapidly changing world. Moh‘s music serves as a testament to the power of artistic expression and the universal language it speaks, leaving an indelible mark on the Middle Eastern music scene and paving the way for a new era of creativity.

“Show Me” is a rhythmic summery mix of R&B/hip-hop and Arabic pop that showcases Moh Flow‘s divergent cultural and musical influences. Inspired by classic Arabic pop hits and loosely structured around 90’s R&B the single is a breakthrough in his artistic aesthetic. “This is a special moment for me, “Show Me” is the first record that’s inspired me to write pure Arabic sections. I’m slowly finding that pocket I’ve been looking for, and this is sort of the way I’m approaching bridging that gap and appreciating what my culture has given me.”

We caught up with Moh Flow below!

What can you share with readers about your new project?

I’ve been referred to as a songwriter before, but with Reckless I feel like I’ve truly earned the title. This project represents my growth as a writer and my vision for myself as an artist. This album was brought to life as a result of unexpected hardship, and was written and recorded in a relatively short period of time following a short hiatus from the studio. We worked with producers for the first time on Reckless, three records were produced or co-produced outside of our core team. New genres explored on this project really helped me craft the evolution of my sound further.

How does this release compare with your other projects you had in the past?

Show Me is the most important single off of my upcoming project Reckless. This single marks my first bilingual record and was received positively on social and editorially. The album Reckless was executed and is being rolled out and supported by Hrmny, a label and creative agency I founded back in 2017. This release is our first truly independent release since Faith which was released in partnership with Sony. As we build our knowledge and sharpen our blade, we have been blessed with continued support from our core supporters. Reckless is by far my best work and will shape my sound for the coming phase of artistry.

What about this single makes you most proud?

The amount of content we have been able to make to premier the record from different angles and perspectives has been a great exercise for us. Learning how to widen the net and get the single heard by fans of similar work. I am forever grateful for new listeners and more exposure that eventually gives my discography a chance at being heard and appreciated.

Was there a specific goal you were trying to accomplish with this release?

Experiment with Arabic lyrics and different melody runs. I was excited to see how people would receive me in a different language with a majority of my listenership being in the US and Canada. I was surprised by how many non arabic speakers were messaging me about the record and adding it to their playlists. Music really is a universal language.

What inspires you to create music? What motivates you to keep going?

I am a refugee, so everything that I ever wanted that comes true is a dream for me. I am never dissatisfied with results. I know art is subjective, and as long as I am able to create and out my work out into the world, I will be inspired and motivated. My dedication comes from the realization that I can actually touch my dreams if I keep giving my artistry the time and effort it deserves. I have touched stages I never imagined I would, met people I never thought I would, and have been blessed with extraordinary experiences as a direct result of my music. I will never lose my drive for making music as long as I am physically able to keep making it.

If you could collaborate with anyone – dead or alive, famous or unknown – who would it be and why? If it’s an indie/DIY artist, please include a link so readers can check them out.

Ty Dolla $, DVSN, or Kaytranada would be a dream at the moment.

What was the last song you listened to? Favorite all-time bands/artists?

Ojerime – Alarming was the last record I actually searched and played. My all times favorites go from Tank, Chris Brown, & Lucky Daye to Tory Lanez, Drake, & Ty Dolla $ or Kaytranada, Mac Miller, & SZA. Can’t forget Kendrick Lamar.

Where is the best place to find you and stay connected?

My IG @mohflowmusic & TikTok @mohflow comments are the only thing I reply to. I love public convos that give the audience more of me and the support system I have. I rarely am in my DMs anymore.

I really appreciate your time. Is there anything you’d like to share before we sign off?

I appreciate your time as well. I just want to reassure anybody considering starting out in any type of art that It’s all possible and nothing is out of reach. The first thing you need to do is execute. Everything else will follow. Also, I don’t charge for features if I like the record.

As the collective attention span shrinks, Eddie Canyon finds himself searching for meaning within the noise. Reaching into and around his Arkansas roots, Eddie carves a distinctively southern Hip Hop undercurrent in his exploratory approach to music. Weaving tales of battling addiction, thoughts on spirituality, and irreverent social commentary into his lyrics, Eddie aims to intrigue his audience at the least, and at most, leave them with a liberating degree of thoughtfulness. In his own words: “The Matrix is real, but there’s a way out.” Support on Spotify or Bandcamp.
