Interview with New Language – Give In

by Joshua (J.Smo) Smotherman May 7, 2018 2:07 pm Tagged With: hard rock, Los Angeles, Metal, Rock, United States

New Language-Give In

In this interview spotlight, I chat with Matt Cohen of New Language about the latest project, motivations, challenges and more.

Full Q&A along with links and music below.

Where are you from and what style of music do you create? (In your own words, not necessarily in marketing terms or by popular genre classifications.)

This is Matt Cohen (bassist) and I am from Irvine, CA. I think we create music that we would want to listen to ourselves. It’s real. You can rock to it, you can dance to it. It’s quite literally what comes out of us when we pick up our instruments and seek to create. This band was started with little expectations of where it would or could go and that is what continues to drive our creative process.

What led you down this path of music and what motivates you to keep going?

I would imagine like most musicians, the instinct is naturally apart of who we are. Even during the harder times of pursuing a creative path, it would be even harder to not be creating music. Music is our outlet and our public medium for communication. We have to get it out.

How is this new release different than previous ones? Were you trying to accomplish anything specific?

This was our first self-produced and self-recorded release as NEW LANGUAGE. We recorded all the instruments ourselves in our studio aside from the drums, which we did at our drummer’s home studio. The video was also edited by our singer Tyler. I guess this was a pretty DIY process, aside from the mixing and mastering. We want everyone to hear and feel this track. That is what we want to accomplish.

Name one or two challenges you face as an indie musician in this oversaturated, digital music age? How has technology helped you (since we know it does help)?

I think you nailed it in the question but it is a double-edged sword. The oversaturation of digital music has made it more difficult to stand out and the metric of success blurry. At the same time, it has also given many artists the platform to be heard and reach a mass audience. Technology has allowed us to record our own songs and reach our fans directly. We can appreciate that.

Where is the best place to connect with you online and discover more music?
