Interview with Plastic Teardrops – Close To The Ground

by Joshua (J.Smo) Smotherman January 31, 2019 11:52 am Tagged With: Alternative, blues rock, downtempo, Electronic, Europe, indie rock, Spain, trip hop

Plastic Teardrops

Plastic Teardrops is a Barcelona (Catalonia) based recording artist and producer well known for his infusion of Trip-hop, Downtempo, Acoustic and Blues.

In this interview spotlight, I chat with Plastic Teardrops about the latest project, challenges, motivations, technology and more.

Full Q&A along with links and music below.

Where are you from and what style of music do you create? (In your own words, not necessarily in marketing terms or by popular genre classifications.)

I am from Barcelona, Catalonia (not Spain). We have a big thing here with Spain, you know? Spanish government has imprisoned innocent politicians, musicians and teachers for their ideas. We live under a constant repression…

Well, sorry, now some words about my music: this is the first album by Plastic Teardrops exploring a new sound concept that could be defined as an infusion of trip-hop, downtempo, acoustic and blues.

This is an introspective album revolving around joint themes of love and life. While the songs stretch their emotional sensibilities to the point where they could have lapsed into melodrama, they are saved by the sheer honesty and piercing emotional expressiveness of the lyrics.

What led you down this path of music and what motivates you to keep going?

Basically the rhythm and vintage sounds from old synthesizers. Almost all tracks are paced at slow tempo with melodic vocals that can captivate the listener.

How is this new release different than previous ones? Were you trying to accomplish anything specific?

I created the first song with the idea to mix acoustic with electronic and I liked the result.

Name one or two challenges you face as an indie musician in this oversaturated, digital music age? How has technology helped you (since we know it does help)?

Definitely the creative process. Once the song is created, the remaining process is very heavy for me. Since I do not have enough resources to record in a studio, I have to mix and master myself every song… and that can be exhausting.

What was the last song you listened to?

Sure Thing by St Germain

Which do you prefer? Vinyl? CDs? MP3s?

Vinyl for the ritual and designs, then MP3 for the practical.

How about this one…. Do you prefer Spotify? Apple Music? Bandcamp? Or something else? Why?

Bandcamp because is focused on artists, the rest are focused in their own business, just to make money.

Where is the best place to connect with you online and discover more music?

My website: http://plasticteardrops.com/

Anything else before we sign off?

There are a couple of albums in process that will come out in the next months.
