Interview with RickStarr – Tax Season

by Joshua (J.Smo) Smotherman January 25, 2022 11:17 am Tagged With: Alabama, Hip Hop, rap, United States

RickStarr-Tax Season

Born and raised in Montgomery, Alabama, RickStarr currently has 4 albums under his belt and recently made his acting debut in the TV series Tax Season.

In this interview spotlight, we chat about the new show, the new music video, technology and more.

Full Q&A along with links and music below.

Where are you from and how do You describe your style of music?

I’m from Montgomery Alabama 334 to be exact. My style of music is best described as hustler and soundtrack music. I feel like my words can paint pictures and are for the ones tryna get money.

How did you get here? As in, what inspired or motivated you to take on this journey through music and the music biz?

From my dad being a radio DJ to my cousin KD and I recording ourselves making movies, writing rap music, and just being gifted with crazy word play. It’s like I was destined to be in front of a camera. I was raised on hip hop and I emulated everything about it.

How does your latest project compare/contrast with your previous release(s)? Were you setting out to accomplish anything specific, follow a specific theme, or explore different styles of creation?

This is my first project exploring the avenue for making music for movie soundtracks. It gives me my own lane in the music industry as a result I will stand out more.

Name the biggest challenge you faced as a creative during these unprecedented? How did you adapt? How have you kept the creative fires burning during all this?

The biggest challenges I faced were shooting Tax Season during pandemic South Carolina.  As the leading actor of the film and a producer for the first time behind the camera learning how much work goes into making a film.  Involve the creative aspect of the soundtrack. On top of that, while being on tour.

What do you stand for?

Loyalty, Courage, Commitment

What was the last song you listened to?

Lil Baby and J. Lucas and yea Lil Baby can definitely be put down on my list of influencers. He’s dope.

Which do you prefer? Vinyl? 8-tracks? Cassettes? CDs? MP3s? Streaming platforms?
