Interview with Scott St. Louis

by Joshua (J.Smo) Smotherman January 4, 2018 9:47 am Tagged With: Los Angeles, singer, songwriter, United States

Scott St Louis

If you missed our previous Scott St. Louis feature, you can find that article here.

In this interview spotlight, we speak with Scott about this latest project, challenges, motivations and more.

Full Q&A along with links and music below.

Where are you from and what style of music do you create? (In your own words, not necessarily in marketing terms or by popular genre classifications.)

I’m from Long Beach ,CA. I consider my music emotional maps to freedom from the prison our minds create. Its rock, but it has all come to fruition through pain, life lessons and experience.

What led you down this path of music and what motivates you to keep going?

I don’t know that I can pin point what lead me down this path, but the feeling I get when creating music is better that any drug you can buy on the planet. My motivation comes from life, its filled with roller coasters and beauty, but it can turn into an upside world with one fleeting thought. That’s where the music comes from.

How is this new release different than previous ones? Were you trying to accomplish anything specific?

I really allowed the players to interpret their own versions of the songs. Instead of me telling them what to pay, I wanted to hear their interpretation of the song and try to conform to that. I believe it made me a better all around musician and it allowed the songs to take on a life of their own. I think when you have guys like Steve Ferrone, Abe Laboriel Sr, Russ Irwin and Jimmy Earl playing, you have to let them do their thing.

Name one or two challenges you face as an indie musician in this oversaturated, digital music age? How has technology helped you (since we know it does help)?

Biggest Challenge is recognition, but I am always up for challenge. The majors still have a strangle hold on the industry. Most streaming services will add you, but others wont because they are still in the old mindset. One benefit is the ability to have your music available to the world without dealing with labels, distributors and retail. You can make your own video content and it can be viewed immediately. I think we independent artist are still trying to figure this whole thing out, but there is a great deal of hope in technology!

Where is the best place to connect with you online and discover more music?

Its long, but pick and chose 🙂
