Northern California rock trio Scribe returns with “Soul Climb,” a riff-driven new single that explores the emotional toll of pursuing a music career, navigating complicated relationships, and finding the resolve to stand apart from the expectations of others. The track marks the next chapter in the band’s ongoing Saga of Little Guy, a larger creative project combining music, animation, and storytelling.
Built around heavy guitar riffs and a steadily intensifying atmosphere, “Soul Climb” emerged as frontman Jericho became increasingly stoic and isolated in his pursuit of music. The lyrics developed organically in response to the song’s forceful instrumental foundation, capturing the frustration of trying to make a name for yourself in an environment where encouragement and envy can be difficult to distinguish.
For Jericho, the song reflects the complicated reality of playing bars and working to get music heard. The pursuit can be exhilarating, but it can also be draining, with flattery, competition, and the pressure to prove yourself creating an emotionally challenging landscape. Those experiences intersect with the weight of growing up in the shadow of older relatives and siblings with larger-than-life personalities, giving the song an additional layer of personal meaning.
The result is a song that pushes back. “Soul Climb” captures the moment when someone who has spent too much time accommodating other people’s expectations decides to draw a line and pursue his own path.
The song also introduces the next stage of the Saga of Little Guy, following the narrative established in the band’s earlier releases. In the series, Little Guy’s journey serves as a vehicle for exploring identity, personal struggles, and the process of finding one’s way through difficult circumstances. Where the story has previously examined confronting inner demons and rediscovering a sense of joy, “Soul Climb” moves into the more challenging territory of asserting independence and protecting one’s sense of self.
The song’s title evokes both the struggle and the determination required to keep moving forward. Its heavy riffing provides the musical backdrop for a character becoming more guarded as he navigates the obstacles in front of him.
“Soul Climb” came together through a collaborative recording process that allowed each member of Scribe to build on the developing arrangement remotely before the final drums were recorded in person.
Jericho began with scratch vocal and bass tracks, which he emailed to the drummer to establish an initial drum part. That version was then sent to the guitarist, who added a scratch guitar track. With the arrangement taking shape, the drummer visited Jericho’s house to record the final drums, playing along to the scratch vocals, bass, and guitar through headphones while Jericho engineered the session.
After selecting the strongest drum take, Jericho sent the finalized drums, along with the scratch bass and vocals, to the guitarist, who recorded and returned his final guitar part. Jericho then completed the final bass and vocal recordings. The finished tracks went to mixing and mastering engineer Graham Ginsburg for the final mix and master.
The process reflects the band’s ability to develop a full, dynamic rock arrangement through a combination of remote collaboration and hands-on recording.
Scribe brings together the muscularity of progressive rock and the immediacy of indie rock, drawing from a broad musical vocabulary that includes Rush, The Police, jazz, folk, R&B, and classical music. The band’s three-piece format puts the emphasis on the chemistry between bass, guitar, and drums, allowing the musicians to balance technical ability with direct, energetic songwriting.
Jericho’s musical identity began taking shape in Glens Falls, New York, where his fascination with The Police led to a deeper exploration of Rush and an expanding appreciation for musicians such as Jaco Pastorius and Marcus Miller. His interests also extend to theatrical productions including Hair and Jesus Christ Superstar, contributing to the band’s interest in music that can support a larger narrative.
Drummer Andrey Ravlyuk and guitarist Zebulon Baldwin joined in 2025, bringing the current lineup together.
Through the Saga of Little Guy, Scribe extends its music beyond the traditional boundaries of a single or album. The project connects the band’s progressive musical instincts with a continuing visual narrative, using the character’s experiences to examine the contradictions, setbacks, and unexpected discoveries that shape personal growth.
With “Soul Climb,” Scribe continues that story by turning its attention toward the struggle to maintain individuality in the face of outside pressure. It is a song about the difficult business of finding your footing, protecting your identity, and deciding when it is time to tell the world to back off.
“Soul Climb” is the next installment in Scribe’s Saga of Little Guy.
