Interview: Shealagh Rose

by Leslie Sherman September 22, 2024 7:55 pm Tagged With: singer, songwriter

Shealagh Rose is a singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist hailing from Hamilton, Ontario. Developing her voice and songwriting in Toronto at Humber College’s Bachelor of Music program, she worked with mentors like Rik Emmett (Triumph), and had the opportunity to record backup vocals with legendary producer Ken Scott. She was a regional finalist in CBC’s 2017 Searchlight competition with the song, “Dream,” off of her debut Island EP. Lush with soulful vocals, addicting progressions, and beautiful string sections, the record boasts the aesthetic of indie folk anthems.

Shealagh‘s sophomore release teases of her earlier works while introducing grittier sounds and blending the lines between folk music and contemporary pop. On “Radio Silence,” the first single from her upcoming sophomore EP, Shealagh‘s motivation to write the single came from a fallout with a friend where neither was speaking to each other. Sonically, the track was purposefully written with gritty guitar, synth, pads and a more emotional vocal performance to encapture the feeling of an argument in the composition.

Now, more than ever, I’m sure we’ve all experienced that feeling of isolation or feeling cut off from people; when efforts to reach out are met with an indifferent or brief response. Or even when it becomes too much that making the effort to reach out to people just becomes bothersome, leading to a vicious cycle. – Shealagh Rose

> What can you share with readers about your new project?

‘Radio Silence’, the first single from my upcoming sophomore EP, was released this past Friday, September 6th!

How does this release compare with your other projects you had in the past?

My first EP “Island” was a lot more folky with grandiose string arrangements, open guitar tunings, and soulful vocals. This release still teases of my earlier works, but with a more modern and pop edge to it. I’ve introduced grittier guitar sounds, synths, with more layered and somber lead vocals.

What about this single makes you most proud?

Lyrically, I’m most proud of the line: “I’m just floating aimlessly like an unchained melody, humming to the radio silence between you and me.” Sonically, I think my favorite part has to be at the breakdown of the song, where everything just sort of explodes into distorted guitar, drum fills, and belted vocals, like an argument between the different musical parts. When everything dies out at the end, I added this melancholic synth part and an eerie “radio” sample which is the last thing you hear in the piece. (I would recommend listening on headphones!).

What inspires you to create music? What motivates you to keep going?

I create music because it’s what I know! I grew up in a very musical household, my dad being a guitar player and teacher. I was always surrounded with instruments to experiment with, took music lessons from a young age, was in school bands, choirs, and my undergrad degree is in music. It’s my creative outlet! It can be very difficult to stay motivated as an independent musician though, especially in this day and age. There are thousands and thousands of songs being released each day and everyone wants a chance for attention. While it’s more accessible than ever to release original music, it’s also incredibly difficult to have that music heard. I’ve learned that creating music shouldn’t be motivated by external factors, but enjoying the process and outlet.

If you could collaborate with anyone – dead or alive, famous or unknown – who would it be and why? If it’s an indie/DIY artist, please include a link so readers can check them out.

I think Kelly McMichael would be a dream to either collaborate with or open for! She is a Polaris Prize short-lister based out of St. John’s, Newfoundland. Her debut album ‘Waves’ is a solid listen from start to finish. I really admire her production and songwriting.

What was the last song you listened to? Favorite all-time bands/artists?

I’m really enjoying the artist Dora Jar at the moment, specifically the song ‘Ragdoll’. It opens with this infectious acoustic guitar riff, and it’s paired with soft layered vocals, a fierce breakbeat, and crunchy synths. The production and songwriting is so great and it’s only a short three minute song, so it is highly replayable.
(Fun fact: she just released the album that the song is off of today – Friday September 13!)

As far as all-time favourite bands/artists, there are too many to name! The Weather Station, Madison Cunningham, Tim Baker, Adrienne Lenker (Big Thief), Julia Jacklin, The Beths, and Aldous Harding are just some of the many artists that inspire me.
