Interview: shn shn

by Leslie Sherman May 1, 2024 11:29 am Tagged With: singer, songwriter

shn shn (she/they) is an electronic experimental pop artist who ventures into the realm of production and soundscapes, immersing herself in the exploration of sonic textures and emotional landscapes. Their music sounds like a blend of lush vocals, meditative beats, and swelling pads, to craft cinematic-inspired music that transcends conventional boundaries. Creating from a space of curiosity, contemplation and care, they question the nature of existence in this bizarre, absurd and exciting world.

Glimmers are not always loud and boisterous and in your face, sometimes they are subtle. shn shn‘s new song, “Glimmer,” represents moments of joy, hope and possibility; which are themes that they explore in their upcoming album.

“Glimmer” aims to take listeners on a journey that twists and turns as the music unfolds into its different parts. The frosty bells fold over themselves, the whispered vocal delivery invites you in, and the apex where the music beat and bass create a completely different vibe suddenly return you back to the bells from the beginning, always moving in cycles. This song is for fans of Björk’s album, Vespertine.

  • What can you share with readers about your new project?

My new song Glimmer is out. It’s the first song off of my full length project that will be coming out later this year. Glimmer is all about levity, fluidity, tapping into small moments of joy that are sometimes subtle, soft and elusive but just as effective and important to living a good life.

  • How does this release compare with your other projects you had in the past?

I feel like I’m continuing to come into my own as a producer by defining my sound, creating more elaborate but cohesive works and working with collaborators that I admire.

  • What about this single makes you most proud?

I’m proud that I let the track breathe and become what it wanted to be in the end. It evolved several times over the couple years of working on it. There were a bunch of amazing collaborators that helped it reach each new stage to what it is now.

  • Was there a specific goal you were trying to accomplish with this release?

Often when creating I’m allowing the music to come into what it is supposed to be after the fact. I let the meanings unfold and reveal itself to me. It was only in its completion that I was able to know exactly what the song was and what it meant to me.

  • What inspires you to create music? What motivates you to keep going?

Simple answer is life – I find it easier to process through creation. Especially with my shn shn project – sound, repetition, cycles, curiosity, introspection and experimentation are big parts of how I connect to my art. There’s always a curiosity to follow, a thought or experience to process through the music.

  • If you could collaborate with anyone – dead or alive, famous or unknown – who would it be and why? If it’s an indie/DIY artist, please include a link so readers can check them out.

I’d love to jam with Kelsey lu and make a chaotically beautiful cello/vocal electro-acoustic song

  • What was the last song you listened to? Favorite all-time bands/artists?

Some of my favourites that are especially relevant to this project are: Kelsey lu, fka twigs, James Blake, feist and Bjork

  • Where is the best place to find you and stay connected?

You can find me on Instagram, Tik Tok, Bandcamp and all streaming platforms

  • I really appreciate your time. Is there anything you’d like to share before we sign off?

Thanks for your time and asking me these questions!
