Interview: Sia Shells

by Leslie Sherman November 25, 2025 3:18 pm

Baja, California-based artist Sia Shells invites listeners to dive deep into their strength and surrender with “Riding The Wave” – an ethereal, ocean-inspired pop anthem that captures the power of resilience, transformation, and trust in the tides of life. Blending her signature mermaid pop aesthetic with dreamlike production and soulful vocals, Sia Shells conjures a sonic spell for anyone struggling to stay afloat.
“‘Riding The Wave’ is all about keeping your head above water throughout the current of life, especially when it pulls you down and it’s hard to see the surface,” she explains. “It’s about resilience, change, and finding the strength to overcome it all while evoking the mysterious and beautiful imagery of the ocean.”

What can you share with readers about your new project?
“Riding the Wave” is the magic mermaid spell designed to be your emotional safety net. The entire track’s composition and lyrics are meant to ebb and flow just like the ocean itself. The music builds and rises, pulling you out of the darkness and leaving you with the ultimate mantra of hope: ‘Open your arms as wide as the horizon meets the sea, ready to carry you to new waves of possibility.’

How does this release compare with your other projects you had in the past?
While “Riding The Wave” continues my signature thematic of powerful ocean imagery and core mermaid aesthetics, this project dials up the emotional stakes. It’s a soundscape for overcoming the deepest waters; a powerful message of resilience and surrender for those moments when you truly feel like you’re drowning.

What about this single makes you most proud?
I’m most proud of the musical structure itself. It perfectly captures the emotional experience of being tossed at sea: the entire track musically ebbs and flows just like a wave. That final, stunning crescendo isn’t just music, it’s the sound of a powerful tide sweeping the listener into a moment of pure, personal empowerment.

Was there a specific goal you were trying to accomplish with this release?
I wanted this song to be a reminder that you have the strength to surface from any current, no matter how deep or scary it may look. The song serves as a visceral reminder that your mindset is your greatest compass, guiding you back up to the light when you need it most.

What inspires you to create music? What motivates you to keep going?
My inspiration begins and ends with the monumental force of the ocean, the way she simultaneously calms, soothes, and mesmerizes us with her timeless beauty. But my motivation comes from finding ways to tune in to relatable, human moments, like feeling down or battling imposter syndrome, and romanticizing them through lyrics and sound. If you’re not adding a bit of whimsy to your life, you’re truly missing out on the everyday magic of it all.

If you could collaborate with anyone – dead or alive, famous or unknown – who would it be and why?
Without a doubt, Bob Marley. His music soothes the soul with the same elemental peace as the ocean itself, and he globally influenced so many people over the years. I vividly remember being landlocked in Toronto during COVID, turning on one of his tracks, and instantly being transported to a sunny beach, a feeling of pure self-love and potent positivity. That ability to deliver freedom is the ultimate magic.

What was the last song you listened to? Favorite all-time bands/artists?
The last song I had on loop was “Livin’ Thing” by Electric Light Orchestra, a perfect dose of buoyant, whimsical energy. My all-time favorites create a celestial soundscape: Tame Impala, Empire of The Sun, Enya, and Massive Attack. They all share an ability to craft meticulous, atmospheric melodies that feel both vast and deeply intimate, much like the ocean itself.

Where is the best place to find you and stay connected?
The most direct way to join the current is on my socials! Definitely “swim by” my Instagram and TikTok (@SiaShells). That’s where I connect daily with all my merbabies and share the exclusive wisdom.

I really appreciate your time. Is there anything you’d like to share before we sign off?
Music is my anchor and my most powerful form of alchemy. It got me through the deepest, hardest currents of my life, and that’s the intention behind every note I write. My truest hope is that people find the same comfort, the same uplifting magic, and the same quiet strength in my songs that I found in creating them.

If you want, I can also polish it to read like a professional Q&A ready for publication without changing your voice. Do you want me to do that?
