Interview with Supergold – The Heart Throb Session

by Joshua (J.Smo) Smotherman March 31, 2020 9:25 am Tagged With: alternative rock, Florida, indie rock, Rock, United States

Supergold-The Hearthrob Session

Supergold consists of 5 musicians each from their own corner of Florida, often being compared to The 1975, The Strokes, and The Smiths. Through their own brand of roaring guitars, eccentric vocals, and glittering synths the band has made a name for themselves in the Miami scene opening for HUNNY (x2), Made Violent, Hot Flash Heatwave, and Drake Bell (Nickelodeon), and throughout the southeast U.S. having just completed their first U.S. tour of 14 cities across 5 states.Their new release strips back their sound to its core with a cover of Harry Styles’ Adore You and a Stripped Down version of their own song Moneylover which the original has garnered over 160,000+ Spotify Streams.

In this interview spotlight, I chat with members of Supergold about the latest release, challenges, technology and more.

Full Q&A along with links and music below.

Where are you from and what style of music do you create? (In your own words, not necessarily in marketing terms or by popular genre classifications.)

Supergold is all from different parts of South Florida, we usually just say Miami because that’s where we perform most often. The style of music we create is based around honesty, I think when writing lyrics what’s honest, is usually what’s most creative and so that’s the well we draw from.

What led you down this path of music and what motivates you to keep going?

The first concert I went to was a little music festival in 2013. I remember while watching the bands perform, I was thinking ‘this is magic’. Watching the bands play their instruments was like watching them cast a spell on the audience. I was standing there and I vividly remember thinking to myself ‘that’s it, that’s what I am supposed to be doing.’ It was a real moment of clarity and it’s never left since.

How is this new release different than previous ones? Were you trying to accomplish anything specific?

This release is very different from anything we’ve done before, it’s a live acoustic double single. We re-imagined one of our own songs ‘Moneylover’ and covered Harry Style’s ‘Adore You’. We wanted to do something in the spirit of love for Valentine’s Day. It was really fun to do it all live and film it for the live session. It’s definitely something we will come back to and do again.

Name one or two challenges you face as an indie musician in this over saturated, digital music age? How has technology helped you (since we know it does help)?

One of the challenges I think we face as indie musicians is balancing all the different platforms we put ourselves on. Social Media is a very powerful tool and keeping up with it can feel like spinning plates. Oversaturation, while is something to consider, isn’t really as big a factor as I think most people make it out to be. I hear the statistics of ‘there are however many thousands of songs uploaded to spotify in a day, how will YOU cut through the noise?’ and I just think that well of those thousands of songs, how many of them are in your genre going for your specific audience? I think that Social Media and Streaming leveled the playing field and has opened us up to gaining our own niche audiences, I truly believe we are in the golden age of the mid-level artist.

What was the last song you listened to?

Blood under my Belt by the drums

Which do you prefer? Vinyl? CDs? MP3s?

While I collect records, I have a record player that I’ve never bought speakers for. So I guess MP3s by default.

Listen on Spotify.

How about this one…. Do you prefer Spotify? Apple Music? Bandcamp? Or something else? Why?

Spotify for sure. I don’t really have a reason, I will say that I’m on the free-mium side, i hate the ads, but i guess i hate paying for it more haha.

Where is the best place to connect with you online and discover more music?
