Interview with Tempting Fate – Catharsis

by Joshua (J.Smo) Smotherman September 26, 2017 9:46 am Tagged With: hard rock, Los Angeles, Metal, Rock, United States

Tempting Fate-Catharsis

In this interview spotlight, we chat with Tempting Fate about influences, the newest project (Catharsis), challenges and much more.

Full Q&A along with links and streams below.

Where are you from and what style of metal would you classify yourselves as?

We’re originally from Redwood City in the San Francisco Bay Area, but we’ve been based out of Los Angeles since the band’s creation.

It really depends on the song, but most of the heavy songs I would say are metalcore at this point. The softer songs don’t really have a set genre, it’s kind of just whatever we want!

What led you down the path of music and what motivates you to stay the course?

Shane: For me I was always really into music, but when I heard Ozzy Osbourne’s “Gets Me Through” I knew for sure I wanted to play guitar. Deep passion for music is what keeps us motivated to not give up.

Cory: I grew up going to small metal shows with my brothers and really kind of got hooked from that. Shane had been playing guitar from a young age and he sort of got me into singing. I think what motivates me is seeing myself on the big stage. Really envisioning it and taking it all in. It creates a hunger in you. Also the want for others to love your music helps motivate a lot!

How is Catharsis different than Illusions? Did you set out to accomplish anything specific?

With Illusions we wanted something ridiculously heavy and angry. With Catharsis, we just let it be a representation of our current state and situation in life. A lot of “life” happened during the making of Catharsis and we wanted it to show through the music.

Do you face challenges as an indie musician in a digital age? How has technology helped you (assuming it helps)?

Yes there’s definitely challenges. The barriers of entry are so much lower now and there’s just so much great music out there that it’s sometimes difficult to stand out. But with all the social media outlets we now have, it definitely provides the opportunity to have people from all over the world hear it. People who would have never heard it are now able to access it easier than ever before. There’s always positives and negatives.

Where can we connect with you online and discover more music?
