Interview with The Don Kap

by Joshua (J.Smo) Smotherman April 3, 2019 9:07 am Tagged With: Hip Hop, New York City, rap, United States

The Don Kap-My Name Means Strong in Hebrew

NYC based Israeli rapper The Don Kap is somewhat of an anomaly considering today’s prevalence of social media and technology. Without cell phone service and only real people in his life, The Don Kap keeps himself grounded in a non-digital world.

Beginning his journey as a rapper at the age of 14, The Don stayed and creative and eventually went on to earn a Masters degree in film. He has a movie coming to theaters this summer titled Sex and the Future. You can jam his growing catalog of music on Spotify.

In this interview spotlight, I chat with The Don Kap about his music, challenges, technology and more.

Full Q&A along with links and music below.

Where are you from? And can you describe the style of music you create?

I hail from the North Bronx. I create in your face real talk NY style music. No Hollywood fluff and fake shit.

What led you down this path of music and what motivates you to keep going?

MTV TRL at the age of 7 due to my older sister. The music video countdown was amazing and I watched after school everyday.

How is your latest release different previous ones? Were you trying to accomplish anything specific?

This is my first pro release. This song is about real life, about a 25 year long relationship I had with someone which ended because he couldn’t accept that I was escaping his hold on me. He started to get jealous and turned into a pig. I saw that and blocked him from my life. Bye bye Fakes!

Name one or two challenges you face as an indie musician in this oversaturated, digital music age? How has technology helped you (since we know it does help)?

Zero challenges. I have God and Trump.

What was the last song you listened to?

Cannot Listen by Mwa, El Don Rap!

Which do you prefer? Vinyl? CDs? MP3s?

Vinyl because I’m a hipster bitch.

How about this one…. Do you prefer Spotify? Apple Music? Bandcamp? Or something else? Why?

Spotify for sure. Love the social component of it.

Where is the best place to connect with you online and discover more music?

You can try to follow my private Instagram account @thedonkap but If I sniff you out as a fake then you for sure ain’t getting accepted. I’m a hawk with a dog’s nose.

Anything else before we sign off?

God bless President Trump
