Interview: The Dream Eaters

by Leslie Sherman December 7, 2023 9:14 pm Tagged With: singer, songwriter

Since 2015, The Dream Eaters have evolved from a dream pop band into a full-on video art project with an extensive catalog of weird and darkly humorous music videos of their catchy pop songs, growing a cult fanbase. The duo started working together after vocalist Elizabeth LeBaron, originally from Calgary, started working at the same bar as singer/songwriter Jake Zavracky, originally from Boston, in the Gowanus neighborhood of Brooklyn, NY.

At face value, “mood pills” simply refers to a pill one takes to enhance their mood. The song deals with what that does to a relationship – how it affects the overall dynamic of a relationship when one person is taking a mood-altering drug and the sexual dysfunction that comes from taking psychiatric drugs.

“I was diagnosed with depression in 2021 and it took a few tries to figure out what medication worked for me,” explains Elizabeth LeBaron. “Those first few months of navigating how it affected my relationships felt a lot like what this song is saying.”

What can you share with readers about your new project?

It’s a sad song about sexual dysfunction. Who wouldn’t want to listen to that?!

How does this release compare with your other projects you had in the
past?

It’s pretty unique for us. We haven’t ever done anything quite like it. For me it sounds like it’s one color, like a really deep blue. It just sounds blue to me. Not like blues music. Just like the color blue, like a royal blue.

What about this single makes you most proud?

I think this song is really good at creating a feeling right from the first line and staying in that place. We recorded it very quickly, which seems like a weird thing to be proud of but it’s so often the case that I overcook a song and it kind of sucks the life out of it. That didn’t happen this time, which is always something to be proud of for me.

Was there a specific goal you were trying to accomplish with this release?

Our goal is pretty much always the same – to make music we really love and then we hope that people can relate to it and that it describes their feelings.

What inspires you to create music? What motivates you to keep going?

I don’t really know the answer to that question. Something tells me to keep going. And nothing tells me not to keep going. I don’t really know why. I would have thought somewhere along the line some voice would have said “you should probably stop doing this now, you should do something that makes you more money”. But it never does.

If you could collaborate with anyone – dead or alive, famous or unknown – who would it be and why? If it’s an indie/DIY artist, please include a link so readers can check them out.

This would probably be someone we’d get to play a solo on something so maybe Miles Davis, Hendrix, Eddie Van Halen. Assuming they’d WANT to collaborate with us. Which they probably wouldn’t.

What was the last song you listened to? Favorite all-time bands/artists?

It was actually “Te Quiero Hoy” by our brilliant friend Exploding Sun. He sings on a couple of our songs too, he just put out a little EP today. (https://tidal.com/browse/track/328720124)

It’s really hard to come up with even a small list of favorite artists because I have so many but Steve Wonder, Aretha Franklin, David Bowie, Curtis Mayfield, Marvin Gaye, Miles Davis, Van Halen, Joni Mitchell, just to name a few.

Where is the best place to find you and stay connected?

YouTube, Instagram, TikTok – we keep all our socials up to date and you can find everywhere we are on our website thedreameaters.com

I really appreciate your time. Is there anything you’d like to share before we sign off?

We appreciate YOUR time. We’ll be releasing a lot of music in 2024 so you’ll be hearing from us often!

As the collective attention span shrinks, Eddie Canyon finds himself searching for meaning within the noise. Reaching into and around his Arkansas roots, Eddie carves a distinctively southern Hip Hop undercurrent in his exploratory approach to music. Weaving tales of battling addiction, thoughts on spirituality, and irreverent social commentary into his lyrics, Eddie aims to intrigue his audience at the least, and at most, leave them with a liberating degree of thoughtfulness. In his own words: “The Matrix is real, but there’s a way out.” Support on Spotify or Bandcamp.
