Interview: Vicki Lovelee

by Leslie Sherman October 16, 2024 2:46 pm Tagged With: singer, songwriter

Vicki Lovelee
is a Chinese-Canadian alt-pop sensation based in Markham, Ontario. With a foundation in classical piano and a degree in jazz vocals, she masterfully blends her deep musical knowledge with a passion for pop — to create a unique genre she calls “dark pop ballerina music at the opera.” Her sound is a dramatic fusion of dark pop and orchestral instrumentations, offering a cinematic experience to listeners.

Lovelee‘s new record, Phase 2: Power Struggle, continues her album series initiated in 2021 with Phase 1: Shadows. This whimsical, fun, and seering new LP represents a period of being in flux – “transitioning into a more confident person but still struggling to regain our power,” she explains. The album’s focus track, “Double Edged Sword,” grapples with one of the challenges to one’s confidence, the archetype of the masked fool. The theatrical alt-pop piece pulsates with anticipation and nimble strings as Lovelee stops falling for their tricks and reveals this individual for who they really are.

What can you share with readers about your new project?

This new album “Phase 2: Power Struggle”  shares the experience of power struggle and the beauty and chaos that comes with it. It’s about being ready to reclaim our power and put that crown on. But it’s tougher than it sounds. Embodying confidence and power involves a lot of push and shove. But all that struggle will be worth it in the end. Listening to the album in order is the best way to immerse yourself in the music experience – full of drama, intensity, thoughtfulness, beauty and chaos.

How does this release compare with your other projects you had in the
past?

Creating this album allowed me to find my sound and the style of music I want to create. The production, lyrics and vocal delivery are very different from my past projects. I’ve definitely grown since then and learned to have fun with my voice and play around with different vocal tones. And the production is a blend of pop, drama, theatre and orchestral instruments. I’m so proud of this new album and am excited to perform it live on stage.

What about this single makes you most proud?

“Double Edged Sword” perfectly embodies what the whole album is about. It’s dark and edgy but also fun and playful (in both production and lyrics). I’m most proud of the

Was there a specific goal you were trying to accomplish with this release?
This album truly shows who I am as an artist – in both sound, lyrics and performance. The positive feedback from everyone has kept me optimistic and I’m excited for more fans to listen to it and know who I am as an artist.

What inspires you to create music? What motivates you to keep going?

Writing and creating music is such a personal experience which I love. It allows me to explore and understand my feelings and experiences. It’s therapeutic to write music. But releasing music is another creative outlet I love that involves a public experience. When I release music, I add a storytelling element through visuals that’ll entertain an audience. The positive response from fans and friends has pushed me to keep going. I see growth in my music and artistry each year and excited to continue growing as an artist.

If you could collaborate with anyone – dead or alive, famous or unknown – who would it be and why?

Lady Gaga has been my favourite artist since I was 15. Her artistry and strong performing skills has captivated since day one. Her eccentric style and lush vocals has definitely influenced me as both artist and in my personal life.

What was the last song you listened to? Favorite all-time bands/artists?

I’m currently listening to Kim Petras album “Feed The Beast”. And some of my all time favourite artists are Lady Gaga, Allie X, MARINA, Charli XCX and Melanie Martinez.

As the collective attention span shrinks, Eddie Canyon finds himself searching for meaning within the noise. Reaching into and around his Arkansas roots, Eddie carves a distinctively southern Hip Hop undercurrent in his exploratory approach to music. Weaving tales of battling addiction, thoughts on spirituality, and irreverent social commentary into his lyrics, Eddie aims to intrigue his audience at the least, and at most, leave them with a liberating degree of thoughtfulness. In his own words: “The Matrix is real, but there’s a way out.” Support on Spotify or Bandcamp.
