Toronto’s Victoria Staff returns with “Love Should Feel” – a bright, romantic indie-pop single that soaks in the joy of love when it’s simple, easy, and right. The track beams with warmth, capturing that rare kind of connection where everything else fades into the background.
“For a long time, I thought love was something that was supposed to be difficult. It was supposed to be chased and fought for,” Staff says. “Turns out, it’s supposed to be easy. ‘Love Should Feel‘ is about just basking in how simple good love is.”
What can you share with readers about your new project?
For a long time, I felt that love needed to be chased and fought for. It was supposed to be full of flames and passion, because that’s how you knew it was good. But this song is not that. “Love Should Feel” is about a love that is easy – easy to have, easy to hold on to. This single felt like the perfect way to wrap up the summer. I’m really happy that people are enjoying it.
How does this release compare with your other projects you had in the past?
This song has been so much fun, from start to finish. Obviously, I always love making music, but sometimes when you’re writing about heavy topics the fun is more cathartic. You find joy through the grief or pain. However, “Love Should Feel” has just been a ball of fun from start to finish. Writing it, recording it, playing it live. I’ve been really lucky to have an experience like this.
What about this single makes you most proud?
I’ve been blown away by the support for this song. Being an independent artist, you can sometimes feel like you’re going at it alone. But then people start to rally around something you created and it’s inspiring. There is so much music out there – there is so much incredible music out there – and I just feel lucky that some people find what I make worth listening to.
Was there a specific goal you were trying to accomplish with this release?
I wanted a happy song – my discography isn’t something I would call “joyous”, whereas this song is. It lives in a space of its own. It’s not that I don’t appreciate all my sad girls who sit in a closet and cry to my songs, but I thought it was about time to release something more uplifting.
What inspires you to create music? What motivates you to keep going?
For me, my life is about songwriting. Making music is almost kind of secondary, if that makes any sense? I started writing music when I was younger as a way to process all my emotions, understand myself better. Turning songs into records and releasing music is just a fun by-product of all the music I write. Even if I hung up my hat and didn’t release music anymore, I would keep writing. I don’t know how to live my life without it.
If you could collaborate with anyone – dead or alive, famous or unknown – who would it be and why? If it’s an indie/DIY artist, please include a link so readers can check them out.
Billianne! Modes of Transportation was an incredible album. I love collaborating with other Canadian artists and I am absolutely blown away by what she is making right now, her voice, just everything she’s doing. I would love to get the chance to collaborate with her.
What was the last song you listened to? Favorite all-time bands/artists?
The last song I listened to was “Nice to Each Other” by Olivia Dean. I’m addicted to her music right now, it’s so feel-good and vibey. And one of my all time favourite artists is Hozier, his work is poetry. I think in terms of lyricism, he’s in a league of his own. I saw him recently when he came to Toronto and my jaw was on the floor the entire time.
Where is the best place to find you and stay connected?
I would say either TikTok or Instagram – both @victoria_staff . That’s a great place to stay up to date with everything I’m doing right now!
I really appreciate your time. Is there anything you’d like to share before we sign off?
I want to say a big thank you to everyone who has streamed and shared and liked the song so far! I’ve only ever wanted to write music and the fact that other people hear my life and my stories and identify with them means the world to me.
