Interview: We Found a Lovebird

by Leslie Sherman August 8, 2024 3:47 pm Tagged With: singer, songwriter

Vancouver’s We Found a Lovebird excels at trance-like chiming rock. Since 2009, they’ve released three albums, one EP and eight singles with highlights including a Polaris Music Prize nomination and radio support from CBC and KEXP. Since 2020, they’ve released seven singles from their upcoming album With Friends Like These.

Their latest release, “Signal Hill,” is a creation coming from multiple sources including a visit to St. John’s Newfoundland’s Signal Hill which was thought of as a spooky setting for a Spy vs. Spy series. The group often pulls inspiration from iconic people, places and even overheard snippets of conversations. “Signal Hill” takes us deep into a Canadian Spy vs. Spy scenario in which you (the listener) are complicit and ultimately found out because of your taste in footwear.

Musically, “Signal Hill” captures an urgent vibe also brought forth by the way it was recorded. Everything except the vocals were recorded live off the floor in our studio. We love the energy of four guys in a room going for it. There’s no faking the live interplay.

What can you share with readers about your new project?
Signal Hill grew out of a trip I took a couple years ago to Montreal and St. John’s Newfoundland. For some weird reason I fixated on the Fila shoes a stranger was wearing in Montreal and concocted a spy versus spy scenario that climaxed at Signal Hill in St. John’s when someone recognized the shoes.

How does this release compare with your other projects you had in the past?
It’s a super urgent post punk rock song which is a genre we don’t often dabble in.

What about this single makes you most proud?
I love the driving rhythm and the deadpan vocals.

Was there a specific goal you were trying to accomplish with this release?
Believe it or not, I had early Interpol in mind when we were working on it.

What inspires you to create music? What motivates you to keep going?
I still get excited by all the possibilities and just love the whole creative process.

If you could collaborate with anyone – dead or alive, famous or unknown – who would it be and why? If it’s an indie/DIY artist, please include a link so readers can check them out.
Really digging King Hannah these days. Such inventiveness within a simple context. https://open.spotify.com/track/3msstebr0HfNT4kdJexWXe?si=ec43af602549458d

What was the last song you listened to?
Big Swimmer by King Hannah.

Favorite all-time bands/artists?
Impossible to pick just one, so here’s a partial list: Jimi Hendrix, Tom Petty, The Cure, Fleetwood Mac, The Smiths, Television, Rose City Band, George Jones, Radiohead, Wilco, oh god there’s too many.

Where is the best place to find you and stay connected?
FB, IG, email, etc – https://s.disco.ac/iymqvtgoqvjm

I really appreciate your time. Is there anything you’d like to share before we sign off?
Thanks a lot for your interest. Long live rock!

As the collective attention span shrinks, Eddie Canyon finds himself searching for meaning within the noise. Reaching into and around his Arkansas roots, Eddie carves a distinctively southern Hip Hop undercurrent in his exploratory approach to music. Weaving tales of battling addiction, thoughts on spirituality, and irreverent social commentary into his lyrics, Eddie aims to intrigue his audience at the least, and at most, leave them with a liberating degree of thoughtfulness. In his own words: “The Matrix is real, but there’s a way out.” Support on Spotify or Bandcamp.
