Interview with Lake Lyon – an Alabama blend of rock, reggae, and alternative

by Joshua (J.Smo) Smotherman January 3, 2015 1:52 pm Tagged With: Alternative, indie, Reggae, Rock

I’ve listened through Lake Lyon’s new album Fernweh several times at this point. The album has been out for a while but below is our introductory interview with the band.

Fernweh by Lake Lyon

Let’s break the ice by introducing yourself to our readers. Who is Lake Lyon? Where are you from? What style of music do you create?

We’re an indie rock band from Birmingham Alabama currently living in Tuscaloosa. We consider ourselves a blend of indie rock, reggae, and alternative.

What is the music scene like in Birmingham? What makes Lake Lyon unique?

Most of the music in the local Birmingham scene is country, rap, or jam bands. Our band is unique because we’re one of the few indie rock bands in the area.

What inspired you to choose the name Lake Lyon for your band? Why choose Fernweh for the album title?

We all went to the same high school and named the band after a lake behind the school called Lion Lake. Fernweh is German for wanderlust, or an aching for distant travel. Our lead singer, Austin, went on a 6 month trip to New Zealand and the Philippines which inspired every song on the EP.

What led you to walking down this path known as music? How long have you been playing? writing? creating?

We all started playing at different times, and it became a passion for each of us. When we started playing together we realized that there was a strong connection between us and the music. Most of us have been writing music for about 6 years.

What was your biggest accomplishment of 2014? What’s coming in 2015?

Finishing our debut EP independently including mixing and mastering was our biggest accomplishment by far. In 2015 we hope to atleast release some new singles, and we’re definitely hoping to start playing shows regularly.

Is the Internet helping you connect with fans and find new ones? Is it hindering you in any way?

It helps us because it is a platform where anyone can access your music and it can be easy to promote, but it also hinders us since anyone can use it, so we have to find something that sets our band apart.

Where can we connect with you online? Hear your music?

You can find us at Facebook.com/lakelyon or our music is available on Spotify, Itunes, and Amazon.
