Interview with Mystique

by Joshua (J.Smo) Smotherman August 29, 2016 8:54 pm Tagged With: dance, Electronic

Mystique.jpg

He’s smashed Tomorrowland and Tomorrowworld to pieces for the past 5 years, gained an army of fans and put out some of the toughest beats on Spinnin’ Records & Mad decent glowing discography this year already.

Known for his sample driven hi-energy house productions, he quickly became one of the most impressive breakthrough producers of 2013 with clubhits like “Here comes that sound” ‘Pull Up’ ‘Going Under’ making tsunami waves around the world and landing Beatport top 10 spots along the way.

After signing a non exclusive 3 single record deal with Sony music this summer, Mystique is totally prepared to embark on an international journey with his signature sample driven production style but this time in a refreshing funky house vibe, Mystique’s new release “Brand New” is now available on Sony / Ultra, premiered by Avicii (le7els podcast), supported by Kaskade, EDX. Currently climbing the charts (nr 12 beatport house chart)

In this interview, we chat with Mystique about influences, his newest project, and more.

Q&A, links, and a stream below.

Let’s dive a little deeper into You, the artist and your music. What attracted you to this genre(s) or style(s)?

Mixing different styles into a fresh and exciting sound has always been my thing, it’s comes natural for me.

What led you into this journey with music? And further, what drives you to push it out to the public?

I’m a music lover and i’ve always been fascinated by everything music related.   Sharing your music with the world is what i like to do, you will know instantly if they like it or not.

Who or what influences your creativity? Have your tastes in music changed over time?

Born and raised as an inner-city, my influences have always been what i hear and see around me in the city.  When growing up it did not change much, because even with all the touring and travelling

i always try to keep an ear on the street.  Grab every chance to visit the small “off the radar” underground clubs/parties because thats often where you can find the most exciting new vibes.

Were you trying to accomplish anything specific on this new project? Creatively or otherwise?

My main focus was to create a summer tune with some tropical influences (sound wise, jamaican vocalist)

What was the last song you listened to?

Alicia Keys – in common

Which do you prefer? Vinyl? CDs? MP3s?

For dj’ing MP3’s, it’s just to easy.  To listen i prefer VINYL.

How about this one…. Do you prefer Spotify? Apple Music? Bandcamp? Or something else? Why?

Hm i’m only active with spotify, bigger reach and easy to use

Other than the digital era overwhelming us with access to an abundance of music, what is the biggest challenge you face when trying to connect with or find new fans?

To be myself and stay one step ahead of everything.   So mainly that means keep coming with the freshest and exciting sound 😀
