Interview with Nashville’s Theatrical Scamp Rockers Fable Cry

by Joshua (J.Smo) Smotherman March 11, 2015 8:33 am Tagged With: indie, Nashville, Rock, United States

From the moment Fable Cry first came to my attention, I became an immediate fan. These guys are doing something fresh, unique, and they stand out among the abyss of musicians and bands in the Nashville area trying to pursue music as a career.

I was even more excited when I saw Scott Fernandez and his one-of-a-kind monstrosity of a bass in the video for Fancy Dancing. Scott and his instrument have easily entered the legendary category. You can learn about Scott’s addition to the band in this interview.

Show your support by sharing, streaming, and purchasing music and merchandise. If you are in the Mid-TN area, go see these guys perform. If you aren’t in Mid-TN, then keep an eye out for tour dates; these scamp rockers are road warriors.

Fable Cry

Theatrical scamp rock….sounds like an awesome new genre. How did you guys end up creating something in this style?

Thanks! It came from a variety of influences, really. The main goal for this band has always been to combine everything that we enjoy about art and entertainment and its various outlets, and throw it together in a way that is cohesive. We love fairytales, so we tell fanciful stories and “fables” of our own. We love theatrical plays and musicals, so we try and make our show visually stimulating, through costumes, makeup, props, etc. We love rock music, so we bring the energy and drive of that, and we all tend to go a bit animal on stage when we combine these things. Our goal is to create music, videos, and live shows that we ourselves would love to experience. If we wouldn’t spend the time and money to listen to / come see us, how can we expect others to, you know?

You’re definitely one of the most unique bands I’ve seen come from the Nashville area. Who or what influences your style? Your sounds?

Disney villains would be proud to find out how much they’ve influenced everything about us! Ha. I’ve always loved anything whimsical and spooky – things that are frightening but fun too – vincent Price, early Tim Burton, Jim Henson, and the like. Much of our sound has come through time and experimentation. When I first started the band five years ago we were just a two piece, and things were limited. This led to a necessity to fill the sonic void that we felt was there, playing multiple instruments at once, and encouraging as much crowd participation as possible. Now that we are a five piece that same need isn’t there, but learning how to sound more diverse and bigger than we actually were back then, definitely carried over as more people joined – and the crowd participation has likewise increased! Although there are few bands in our weird little scene here in Nashville, people here have been very receptive of what we’re doing, and we’re extremely grateful for that.

What was the last song you listened to?

“Oh Lord” by Foxy Shazam. One of our favorite bands, I might add.

How key has touring been for your success? Any awesome road stories worth sharing?

We really are such a “live” band, that touring has been very important for us in getting audiences to fully experience what we do, and of course in reaching new audiences that might not have otherwise heard of us. Since our style isn’t exactly pop country, it’s easy to find people who have never really listened to music like ours. I think people try to make sense of it by comparing us to an endless number of things, from “whimsical fun Charlie Chaplin-like silliness” to “Tom Waits’ kids on acid.” I love hearing what we remind people of, because it’s often different every night.

Scott Fernandez and his bass have become legends in their own right. How did the addition of Scott and his unique ability to play that thing change the sound and/or the way you guys write songs?

We didn’t really have a bass player at all before Scott, so he has definitely added much to the band – both sonically and visually with his handsome thumping! Some of Fable Cry’s earliest shows were shared bills with Scott doing solo sets and he offered clear back then to play bass with us – we thought he was joking. He offered again last year and this time we immediately leapt at it! He’s pretty unreal.

What’s next for Fable Cry? What are you trying to accomplish by the end of 2015?

Our newest album will be out, new music videos, and lots of touring! We are so ready to start sharing all of this new excitement with the world, live and in person!

Any last thoughts? Shout outs? Words of wisdom?

I say, do things that make you feel alive. Surround yourself with people who make you feel alive. Imagine greatness. Play often. Dream big. We’ve barely begun this wacky musical Merry Go ‘Round, but we’ve loved every second of it and it’s working out pretty well so far. Won’t you climb aboard?
