Interview with Seasonal Beast – Muscle Memory

by Joshua (J.Smo) Smotherman December 14, 2017 1:29 pm Tagged With: downtempo, electro rock, indie rock, New York City, post rock, Psychedelic Rock, United States

Seasonal Beast

In this interview spotlight, we chat with Seasonal Beast about various styles of rock music, challenges, their latest release and more.

Full Q&A along with links and a stream of their album, Muscle Memory, below.

Where are you from and what style of Indie Rock would you classify yourselves as?

I’m originally from the Tel Aviv Israel. I think that there are many styles and influences that leaked into our music. I’m influenced by singer songwriters as much as I am from post-rock artists, film music, downtempo electronica and psychedelic pop….How about Singer songwritey-post rock-cinematic-downtempo -electro-psy-pop then? I may be the worst person to ask about that.

What led you down the path of music and what motivates you to stay the course?

Ever since I remember myself I was drawn to expressing myself through music. As a kid, I used to rebel against my piano teacher for being so strict and not encouraging any artistic expression…she tried to teach me how to play Mozart perfectly (which is not a bad thing by all means) but I was more interested in spending the time near the piano trying to figure out things, discovering sounds and harmonies, explore…

The music business definitely makes it easy to push that essence aside.

But I want to think that this kid that was fascinated by music and by its impressions, is still there making sure we are not too distracted by all the other bullshit

How is Muscle Memory different than your previous releases? Did you set out to accomplish anything specific?

Muscle Memory is the first Seasonal Beast release. Which means that its the first full-length album that I’m the sole songwriter and producer.

The first thing to accomplish was “coming out” as a songwriter with his own vision of sound, as apposed to assist other artists with their own vision.

It was a long mental process for me and the ways it paid off are beyond the musical achievement.

Do you face challenges as an indie musician in a digital age? How has technology helped you (assuming it helps)?

The challenges are never-ending. I think there were always challenges for artists trying to get noticed. The digital age helps you create music with relative ease, and publish it by yourself. Of course its easy to get lost in this oversaturated environment and lose track of this fast-changing rules of the game.
