Interview with Stuck With Green – The Potentater

by Joshua (J.Smo) Smotherman June 28, 2016 10:14 am Tagged With: indie

Stuck With Green

In this interview, we have a virtual pow wow with comedic musical creator Matt Thompson who is the mastermind behind Stuck With Green.

As an experimental and studio-based composer from Orlando, Florida – Thompson ensures his eclectic creations stick out from the pack.

You see; only Matthew could write such a sordid array of rock and electronic orchestral operas. On one hand, this “Potentater” crafts satirical songs that make Pontificates blush. On the other hand, he’s an award-winning songwriter and publisher with tunes on TV shows.

Curious to know more about the “Potentater”? Visit Stuck With Green’s website.

Who or what influences your playing and/or writing styles? Also, what motivates you to keep creating?

Trent Reznor is my main musical admiration. From there, it flows to different artists and projects. I’m playing Fallout 4 right now and the composition in that game by Inon Zur is breathtaking! As far as what motivates me, I’ve just always had it from the very beginning. When I was a kid, I always listened to music and would pick parts of songs that I thought were excellent and something I would’ve also created if I had the skill.

My Dad, a Southern Baptist preacher, did not like me listening to mainstream music. One night, he came into my room as I had my headphones listening to rock music and analyzing/enjoying as I’ve just informed you. My Dad took it from me and told me to quit listening to my “Devil” music. I was so desperate for mainstream music that as a teenager that I was arrested for shoplifting a few rock cassettes. My Dad took my collection and smashed it all with a hammer after that incident.

I was obviously wrong for shoplifting, but my soul was not being fed the kind of music that burned within for me to create. It wasn’t till I left my parents for college that I could start fleshing out my musical passions. It’s been difficult. I’ve largely been on my own, trying to find my own way since the very beginning. Still am…. as I do not feel I’m near where I need to be for my musical creative hunger to feast on a daily basis.

What was the last song you listened to?

Just listened to Black by The Soft Moon. And before that I was listening to instrumentals by Gesaffelstein “Hate or Glory” and “Trans”

Other than the digital era overwhelming us with access to an abundance of music, what are one or two of the biggest challenges you face when trying to attract listeners to your music?

Me. I think I’m the biggest challenge to being heard. I think I turn people off when I don’t mean to and I think I turn people on but don’t follow through somehow or some way that would build a lasting relationship. My biggest challenge is me.

Do you gig, tour or perform through any live streaming services? Where can music lovers see you perform?

Not yet. I’m planning to perform or at least be more active at the Open Mics here in Orlando. Orlandobands.com hosts one every week on a Tuesday night that I plan to frequent as much as possible. (Please pray for my city family as we grieve the tragedy of lost lives via the horrible Pulse shooting that is currently in the news)

Where is the best place to connect with you online? Discover more of your music?

My Reverbnation page. There is also a “Contact” tab on my website stuckwithgreen.com that works just fine too.

Any last thoughts? Shout outs? Words of wisdom?

LOL! WORDS OF WISDOM?!? FROM ME?!? LOL! I’ll give it a try…….. Word of Wisdom….”God is a Spirit and they that worship Him must worship Him in Spirit and in Truth” John 4:24. Shoutout to Trent Reznor for saying “thank you” when I awkwardly paid him compliments and then even more awkwardly asked him how he keeps doing his dark art without losing his mind. Last thought?…. “We loved with a love that was more than love” – Edgar Allan Poe…..he and I have the same birthday 😉
