Interview with The Trails

by Joshua (J.Smo) Smotherman May 7, 2013 10:05 am

MusicTree Festival will be going down June 7 – 11 in Manchester, Tennessee. We will be publishing info and features about the bands as we close in on this event. Feel free to check out our coverage from 2012.

Let everyone know who you are, where you are from and what style of music you play.

The Trails are part of the jam band tradition wherein live performance and improvisation are fundamental to the art. But like the finest jam bands, they are much more than that and should not be pigeonholed by that terminology.  The range of musical styles that influence and inform the Trails’ sound is truly vast, reflecting the different backgrounds of the musicians as well as their common interest in musical diversity. Yet these varied pathways merge to form a fresh and energetic musical direction.

Some of the many influences from music history that are evident in the Trails’ music include classic rock (Led Zeppelin; The Who), progressive rock (Genesis; Rush; Frank Zappa; King Crimson), classic jam bands (Phish; the Allman Brothers), modern jam bands (Lotus; Disco Biscuits; Umphrey’s McGee), jazz fusion (Mahavishnu Orchestra; Return to Forever), traditional jazz (John Coltrane; Miles Davis), heavy rock (Tool; Metallica), funk, reggae, and classical music.

What do you do for fun? You know…besides music?

Hiking, camping, cooking, baseball (watching!) Honestly though, a lot of music!

What was the last song you listened to?
One of our songs. A new arrangement of Ode to Joe. If you mean something besides our stuff, Widespread Panic live recordings.
What did you listen to when you were younger? What do you listen to now? Have your tastes changed?

We all went through a metal phase and still listen to some of that (especially Tool). I think that our tastes have all broadened as we have become more accepting of many broad types of music.

Was there an “ah-ha” moment in your life when you knew music would be the path you were going to walk?

I think that it is more like an addiction that you HAVE to play music. That all came for us at different times but probably when we realized that we could actually sound like one of the bands that we worshipped.

How did you hear about Music Tree Fest?

Craigslist

How do you feel about being a part of Music Tree Festival?

We feel very lucky. There is so much amazing music in Tennessee and it is an honor to be a part of the festival.

Do you have plans for Bonnaroo?

Only one of us is going this year (Max). This will be his first year and he is pretty stoked.

Do you have an album available? Where can we get it? Where can people connect with you online?

YES! www.thetrailsmusic.com
