Jazz Master Itamar Borochov Blends Cultures and Unorthodox Arrangements on New Album, Boomerang

by Joshua (J.Smo) Smotherman February 14, 2018 11:21 am Tagged With: composer, Israel, jazz, Middle East

Itamar Borochov-Boomerang

Every so often something highly impressive that has been brewing outside our radar for a long time finally simmers to the surface of our awareness.

World-renowned, critically acclaimed trumpeter and Jazz composer Itamar Borochov is the newest gem discovered in our never ending search for great music. His latest album, Boomerang, is supported by the prestigious Laborie Jazz Label and is working it’s way through US markets as more and more jazz fanatics uncover Itamar’s distinct style and high caliber of musicianship.

Itamar seamlessly blends influences from Middle Eastern musical traditions, his ever expanding love for Arab and pan African sensibilities, and a knack for creating unorthodox arrangements of traditional folk melodies.

Native to Jaffa, an integrated Muslim-Jewish-Christian city, Itamar has the natural advantage of experiencing a unique blend of cultures and the musical traditions native to the various groups composing that blend.

Having worked with legendary artists such as Curtis Fuller and Candido Camero, and acclaimed world music sensation Yemen Blues, Borochov ventured into solo artist territory with the release of his previous album, Outset. Outset made it onto New York City Jazz Record’s Best of 2014 List.

Boomerang peaked at #5 on iTunes’ Jazz Download chart, and #6 on Amazon’s Jazz Download Chart. Adding to this list of accolades and achievements, Borochov has performed internationally at well known venues and festivals including Lincoln Center (NY), The Kennedy Center, (Washington DC), Montreal Jazz Festival, and the Moscow Jazz Festival.

Boomerang was mixed in New York by award-winning engineer Brian Montgomery (who has worked with Paul McCartney, Esperanza Spaulding, Donald Fagen, Herbie Hancock). Musicians featured on Boomerang include pianist Michael King, bassist Avri Borochov, and drummer Jay Sawyer. As a quartet, these top shelf musicians have toured often reaching audiences across large distances. Their undeniable chemistry has resulted in crowds from all over the world being left in awe from the virtuosic display.

A special guest on Boomerang is Israeli composer Yisrael Borochov (on jumbush and vocals). Yisrael is Itamar’s father.
