Learning To Play An Instrument Successfully

by Featured Guest June 5, 2015 4:24 pm

With a huge array of instruments available to play, you might be confused about the vast choices. Learning to play an instrument is a big commitment, but you can master it and continue to enjoy its sound for years ahead. Taking a few simple steps before and after your instrument purchase ensures you’ll stick with this rewarding hobby and benefit mentally from its melodic beauty.

Experiment First

Start your musical journey by attending concerts, symphonies and other gatherings. Keep an eye on particular instruments that move you. From the bass guitar to harp, instrument types are widely varied. You can even visit a music store to strum a guitar or blow a little on a saxophone. Experimenting with instruments is crucial to find a sound you truly love, especially when you must practice all the time to refine those notes.

Sign Up for Lessons

A major mistake people make when they finally figure out their first instrument choice is failing to take lessons. You could play by ear and fiddle with the notes, but you can’t truly master an instrument without instruction. Find a music teacher or sign up for online classes to learn how to read music and play it effectively. You’ll gain a better understanding of the art with this strategy.

Commit to Gigs or Recitals

You might know a few songs and play them well, but there’s no real urgency to master them perfectly. To motivate yourself on a particular instrument, schedule a performance or gig. It can be for a few friends, at a business or even recital style with other performers. This musical deadline gives you a true endpoint to master a piece. Afterward, you can master another song to keep your successes flowing.

If you’re still unsure of your instrument choice just before a purchase, you can always rent one initially. Local music stores often rent instruments to schools and local charities, for example. Take advantage of this rental opportunity to try out several instruments over the course of a few months. You might find an instrument that you’ve never considered before to be your favorite.
