Matt and The Beanstalk Interview – Symphony

by Joshua (J.Smo) Smotherman April 4, 2017 5:18 pm Tagged With: Alternative, Rock, United Kingdom

Matt & The Beanstalk is a brand new project of the Nottingham based artist, brand new to the scene since November 2016. The fact that both Bramwell Bronte and “Matt” were the only two to play all the instruments on the single is an impressive start to his musical journey and with influences like Kate Bush, Hall and Oates and Darwin Deez we can only expect to hear more memorable melodies from Matt in 2017.

Matt & The Beanstalk’s single Symphony is out on 14th April 2017 via Beanstalk Records.

In this interview feature, we chat with the band about influences, navigating this digital music world, their newest project and more.

Full Q&A along with links and stream can be found below.

Let’s dive a little deeper into You, the artist and your music. What attracted you to this genre(s) or style(s)?

If I’m being totally honest, this sort of music comes natural to me, I just experiment with different instruments and different textures and dynamics and whatever happens happens, I really enjoy it which is half the battle, I guess I could say that the enjoyment is the attraction.

How long have you been creating and sharing your music with the public?

Symphony is my first release so it’ll have been available for the public to listen to for about a week or two, so yeah all in all about a week, it’s really exciting and new, I’m just looking forward to hearing what everyone thinks about it.

Who or what influences your playing and/or writing? Also, what motivates you to keep going?

I have lots of influences, Kate Bush, Darwin Deez, Hall and Oates, they all influence me in their different ways. I write because it’s the only way I can reveal any kind of emotion, I’m not fantastic when it comes to crying and stuff, writing and recording and performing for me, is the best way to put everything out there and make it as raw as possible.

Were you trying to accomplish anything specific on this new project? Creatively or otherwise?

Not particularly, it’s very new and I’ll have lots to learn from this debut single, I’d like Symphony to do as well as possible, and to achieve some radio play and some recognition because when you put everything into something, recognition for all your hard work is the best feeling.

What was the last song you listened to?

The last song I listened to was ‘Breakfast in America’ absolute banger, no one writes songs like that anymore.

Which do you prefer? Vinyl? CDs? MP3s?

I love vinyl because I think its part of a generation where music was still alive, you know everyone wanted to go out and see live music and have a great time and dance and stuff, now there’s so many other things to do that I think live music is slowly dying, tickets are snapped up instantly and then sold for three times the original price, it’s really sad. I have so much respect for artists who save their fans from these situations and I have so much respect for fans who will always go see smaller bands as well as stadium sellers.

How about this one…. Do you prefer Spotify? Apple Music? Bandcamp? Or something else? Why?

Again if I’m being totally honest, Spotify is the only one I’ve had any experience with, and I really like them, the payments are a bit intense but thats streaming for you I suppose.

Other than the digital era overwhelming us with access to an abundance of music, what are one or two of the biggest challenges you face when trying to attract listeners to your music?

My answer is in your question haha, it’s trying to reach out to people, trying to connect with people and trying to find genuine music lovers that will take the time to listen to your songs. Another challenge I’ve faced is trying to find a USP to interest people, make them curious almost. I think that’s one of the main reasons why I am being completely anonymous with this project.

Do you gig, tour or perform? Do you ever live stream? Where can music lovers see you live?

Right now I’m purely a solo artist, and that’s all I’ll ever be, I’d love to gig and tour sometime and I’d love to ask fans of my music to help me with live shows, imagine being really into someones music and being able to play with them on stage. I would love something like that to happen to me so I’d love to make it happen for someone else. I will live stream at some point, I’d recommend people check out my social media pages for things like that.

Where is the best place to connect with you online? Discover more of your music?

Spotify, iTunes, Facebook, my official blog/website, my twitter, all the usual places.

Any last thoughts? Shout outs? Words of wisdom?

Well thank you to you guys for taking the time to talk to me and hmm wisdom, I’m not very wise haha, maybe ask me that one in a year or two.
