Mirva “One” Great Pop EP from Down Under

by C Bret Campbell May 27, 2013 11:06 pm

Mirva_Press_3She’s been called “a soft female Tom Waits.” Now, I like to think I’m an imaginative writer, but that’s an awful big stretch, just because it’s one of those juxtapositional impossibilities, kay? All right … on to business.

On this one let me get my complaining out of the way up front. Compression – way too much! Just like so many other radio-ready-pop records. Now that I’ve called it that, I guess we can forget the whinin’. It’s probably meant to be that way.

This is my very first time hearing Mirva an Australian from Sweden, who has a few successful projects under her belt already. In the first few bars of the opening title, “One,” I was struck by her vocal power and the sincerity in her voice.

She’s got total mastery over those pipes, and is able to inject soulful blues feelings, classic pop runs, and emotional closeness into her songs like nobody’s business.

The song itself, is an inspiring anthem and proceeds from it are going to support one of the singer’s favorite projects, “Save the Children Australia.” Gotta give here props for that! It should raise some good support. The popular sounds and upbeat message and feel would lend themselves well to a number of TV shows, radio spots, or film placements. I wouldn’t be surprised at all to hear it somewhere, soon.

With her easy flowing lyrics and honey-smooth vocal Mirva delivers a solid record, here with two double good dance-love numbers, and a beautiful ballad –  “Bring Me Closer” – a nice piano piece with sweet vocals. That over-compression business is non-existent, on this one. I wish all the tracks had been able to breathe like this track does.

Out of the four, “Bring Me Closer” is definitely my favorite, for its simpler approach, but all of the songs are well written and the production is awful darn good it and oughtta be – Braddon Williams (The Script, Beyonce, Guy Sebastian) – dig? The EP is currently available as a pre-release download and is set to be released in July 2013.

As for the title track:

Save The Children Australia have chosen to use this song for their “Champions For Children: State of The World’s Mothers Report Campaign”. This campaign reminds us that the wellness of the worlds mothers has a direct impact on the wellbeing of our children. As a mum myself I feel very passionate about this cause, it is critical that we educate mothers and tell our governments about the importance to invest in basic solutions order to help diminish malnutrition and save lives. The campaign also pushes for more health workers throughout the world that can assist new mum’s and other people in need of medical aid or other support. Please visit Save The Children for more info on this cause.

I am so exited about this video and I can’t wait to see the first cut. I feel so blessed to be surrounded by such amazing team of people that are on the same page and understand what it is I am trying to deliver.

Ya, know, I got a friend in “Melb’n” I think I’m gonna send this to. She’s got a station called Butterflies Radio, and I think she’d like it a lot.

Mirva also sent me the press release for the record, which you can read here: One Featured Press Release
