Online Festival welcomes Meri Amber

by C Bret Campbell August 30, 2013 12:39 am

We talked recently with Meri Amber about her release, “Love$Accy”. She’ll be playing the AITP Online Music Festival, and we are pleased to share her thoughts with you. Oh, and she’s got a new record coming out real soon, too! You might want to check out the samples while you get to know her a little better.

Let’s start at the beginning. Tell us a little about yourself. how and when did you start making music?

Haha, heya! I’m Meri Amber. I’m a singer songwriter from Australia that likes singing stories and taking people through my world. I kicked off when I was super young, joining guitar ensemble in kindergarten and rocking out “Mary Had A Little Lamb”. Since then, I’ve gone through a performing arts high school, a talent school and the rocky roads of the “real” world.

Why do you do it, now?

I can’t help it! I love it. More than anything. I’m compelled to keep writing songs and creating my art. It’s my favourite thing to do and every moment I spend on it couldn’t be spent better.

UPDATE: 7/20/16 Meri is still going strong! Here’s one from her latest record

What were some of your early influences and what inspires you today?

At the very start of my musical career I wanted to be in a girl group just like B*Witched. That grew and I came to be inspired by many bright pop acts like Mika, Aqua, Lily Allen, Train, Kate Miller Heidke, The Bee Gees, Regina Spektor, Lenka- the list goes on. Essentially, because I tell stories about what happens in my world, the biggest inspirations are also the people around me. My family, friends, boyfriend and all the incredible things they say, do or teach me.

What was the last song you listened to (disc in the car or what-not)?

This is going to sound very odd- but it was actually myself! I don’t usually sit around listening to myself, but my first ever CD of songs that I’m launchingis ever so close to ready. I was listening to the CD in every sort of sound device (laptop, car speakers, ipod etc.) that I could find so that I could make good final notes to send to my mastering engineer to fix it up just right before I release it.

How did you connect with Artists in the Plus and what attracted you to working with them?

I first joined Google+ because my boyfriend, who is an IT genius, recommended to me that I join to get my music out there. It was surprisingly one of the easiest social media channels to learn how to use. I really liked the “Explore” function and found lots of posts to comment on and through interacting on one of these posts I found Artists In The Plus. The AITP community was so friendly and supportive that I absolutely loved becoming a part of it and have stayed a part of it since.

Last year’s festival was a huge success and changed a lot of things about music on the net. Were you a part of that?

I was! It was a great experience, so fun and surreal at the same time. I played songs for a good half hour of the show and then afterwards hopped into a second interview hangout. There was such a buzz at the time, I knew I was a part of something special.

What would you like to see as a result of the festival, this year?

I personally know that the buzz hasn’t died and has in fact grown. I’d love to see the festival reach new audiences and new heights. The team behind AITP have been busy ensuring that the festival runs even smoother than last year and there’s going to be even more participants. I can’t wait.

Have you been using services like Hangouts On Air, U-Stream, Street-Jelly, or others to perform live via video on line? What kind of reaction are you getting?

I’ve mainly been focused on the Google+ Hangouts On Air. It was very different to what I first expected it would be. Video Hangouts are much more advanced than old school video calling was the last time I looked into it not long ago. There’s real time reactions and its much more personal than other online interactions. Personally, I really enjoy the intimacy and casual nature of them, the reactions I’ve gotten have been fabulous and I’ve made some truly great friends in the process.

Village Studios in LA will be hosting the festival, this year and there will be a studio stage in North Carolina and another in Norway. Will you be travelling or performing remote from your own studio?

I wish I could be travelling out to Village Studios! Unfortunately, being located in Australia and with the festival happening only a week after my CD Launch, I can’t get out there. Instead I’ll be performing remotely from my own studio.

If you could ask one performer to join you on a record, who would it be?

Wow- what a tough question! I think it would be super cool to do something with the band Train. I think they are fabulous live performers and song writers *fingers crossed* that can happen one day!

What one thing would you change about this world, if you could?

Haha, bring Village Studios to Sydney so I can do the hangout from there!

Where can we find you and your music?

Basically, I’m all over the internet. My Official Website is definitely the best place to start as it has links to all the other social media spots as well as collections of all of my stuff. I truly love my website, so I update it almost every day with new content, blogs and the such. I’d also very much like a like on Facebook if you’re a bookfacer and a subscribe on Youtube if you’re a tuber and you like my stuff 😉

In closing, is there anything you would like to add or anyone you would like to shout-out to?

To everyone that listens to my songs, follows what I do and supports what I do- thank you. Thank you for giving me inspiration to create, thank you for giving me a reason to strive for my best and thank you for giving me confidence to share it. You rock.
