Reeya Banerjee Finds Herself in “For the First Time”

by Leslie Sherman June 21, 2025 5:18 am Tagged With: 2025, indie, new music, singer, songwriter, United States

Some songs hit you immediately with their polish or power. Others slip in slowly, like a memory you didn’t know you missed. That is where Reeya Banerjee’s “For the First Time” lives.

It’s the kind of track that doesn’t try to be flashy, but ends up being unforgettable because of how honestly it sits with you.

The second single from her upcoming album This Place, “For the First Time” is a reflective ballad about transformation – both quiet and profound. Written in hindsight but emotionally rooted in the kind of moment that reshapes you without warning, the song explores the slow realization that you’re falling in love not just with another person, but with your environment, your life and that version of yourself who’s starting to emerge.

Listen here:

Banerjee places the story in the Hudson Valley, at the historic and idiosyncratic Mohonk Mountain House, where she worked during a formative stretch of early adulthood.

The details are personal, but the emotions are instantly recognizable. Its that feeling of nostalgia that is instantly recognisable – that bittersweet ache of remembering a time when things were uncertain but rich with possibility.

Reeya’s vocals are warm and understated, allowing the lyrics to breathe. There is a quiet steadiness that draws you in. The listener can get the sense that Reeya is not performing the song so much as sharing it. She knows exactly what she wants to say, and trusts the song to carry the weight.

The production by Luke Folger, who also co-wrote the track, is full of small, intentional choices that make the emotional core of the song shine.

The guitars are soft and twinkling, the background vocals gentle and atmospheric, and the overall soundscape feels wide open. Like standing outside on a clear night. It’s a fitting backdrop for a song that deals so much with self-discovery, nature and space – both physical and emotional.

What makes F”or the First Time” especially compelling is that it marks a shift in Banerjee’s songwriting. While her earlier work, like fan favorite “Need You There”, leaned into a more playful or defiant energy, this song slows everything down.

It’s introspective, mature and personal but without losing the accessibility that makes her music so resonant. It’s a song that trusts its listener to lean in and listen.

And there’s something powerful about hearing an artist capture a time in their life with such clarity. Especially when that time was once confusing or chaotic. For the First Time” doesn’t look back with rose-colored glasses, but with understanding. It honors the mess and the magic in equal measure.
