Bronx born singer-songwriter Rene Lopez has never been one to smooth the edges, and his latest single, “Goin Back To Lovin’,” leans fully into that. Out now, the track offers a stripped down, emotionally direct look at what happens when the bravado fades.
Built on a gritty blend of outlaw country, Latin soul and rock & roll, “Goin Back To Lovin’” finds Lopez confronting his own missteps head-on. The song doesn’t shy away from broken bridges or hard earned lessons, but instead it follows the quiet determination of someone choosing to stop running and start rebuilding. The groove is not forced, and Lopez’s vocals are close and conversational, like a late night confession shared over a drink at a neighbourhood bar.
Lopez’s musical roots run deep. Raised between the Bronx and Manhattan, he grew up surrounded by music. His father, René López Sr., was a trumpet player with Ray Barretto and Tipica ’73. That rhythmic foundation still pulses through his work.
In the early 1990’s, Lopez fronted The Authority, a band that became part of New York City’s downtown club scene, playing venues like CBGB and Wetlands during a particularly electric era for the city.
Since then, he’s carved out a prolific solo career, moving freely between funk, soul, Americana, Latin music and classic rock influences.
NPR’s Alt.Latino once dubbed Lopez a “one-man song factory,” but “Goin Back To Lovin’” shows a different side of that productivity, one which is rooted in reflection rather than momentum. “Goin Back To Lovin’” serves as an emotional centerpiece for Lopez’s forthcoming album, A New York Lie, a twelve track collection that explores heartbreak, reinvention and the complicated relationship between an artist and the city that shaped him.
If this single is any indication, the album will be less about mythologizing New York and more about learning how to live honestly within it.
