Roots Under Me by Callum Kerr: A Texas-Tinged Folk Rock Journey

by Leslie Sherman July 24, 2025 10:41 am Tagged With: singer, songwriter

Tomorrow marks the release of Callum Kerr’s debut EP Roots Under Me, a collection that showcases his rich songwriting and an ability to fuse twangy country with broad folk rock influences. Kerr’s background is a compelling mixture of Scottish heritage and Texas upbringing, now centered in Nashville, and this cultural fusion informs every note on the EP.

The opening track All Out of Me immediately grabs attention with its honest lyrics and broad folk instrumentation. The song is a slow burn of emotional release, layered with twangy guitar tones and Kerr’s expressive voice. It is an intimate look at vulnerability, delivered with a classic country heart.

Next up, Used to Love This Town introduces a more upbeat rhythm with jangly guitars and a slightly rock-inflected sound. The song explores feelings of displacement and nostalgia, balancing wistful lyricism with a broad folk rock vibe. It’s the kind of song that can make listeners both smile and reflect on their own experiences.

Cold Beer Cold brings a shift in mood with an energetic, almost celebratory tone. The track is a perfect summer anthem, rooted in country rock with twangy guitar riffs that invite sing-alongs. It captures the lighthearted side of Kerr’s songwriting, making it a standout moment on the EP.

The fourth track, It Ain’t Working, takes a somber turn, dialing back the tempo and focusing on the rawness of relationships falling apart. This track blends subtle folk rock instrumentation with Kerr’s vulnerable vocal delivery. The minimalistic arrangement highlights the emotional weight of the lyrics, making it one of the EP’s most introspective moments.

Silver Lining offers a hopeful counterbalance with its uplifting melody and broad, shimmering acoustic guitars. It feels like an anthem for overcoming adversity, the kind of song that lingers long after it ends. Kerr’s ability to blend heartfelt storytelling with a broad musical palette is evident here.

The EP closes with Whatever Gets You There, a relaxed and rootsy tune with twangy instrumentation and a laid-back groove. This final track offers a message of acceptance and moving forward in your own way, wrapping up the EP on a thoughtful and authentic note.

Produced by Huff Co., Roots Under Me sounds polished yet organic, allowing Kerr’s voice and songwriting to shine through. The EP’s release coincides with Kerr’s rise as a performer, with his Grand Ole Opry debut on the horizon. This collection positions him well for a growing audience that appreciates country music with depth and a modern edge.
