Interview with Shorts – Long Story Short

by Joshua (J.Smo) Smotherman August 12, 2016 6:40 am Tagged With: Hip Hop, New York, rap, United States

White Plains, New York rapper Shorts presents Long Story Short, his new EP featuring Breeze Mantana and Kayne Precise. The EP comes on the heels of visuals for “Good Space” (watch) and “Money” (watch). “‘Long story short’ is a common phrase used to sum things up or conclude something,” Shorts says about his new project. “It’s a phrase I happen to use often and recently I’ve been reminded by family that I’ve been using it for a while now. I’m a very direct/to the point type of person so the title/ideology of ‘Long Story Short’ coincides well with who I am as an individual. Inspiration for this project all came from real life events… new encounters/breakups/disappointment/daily experiences all played a part during the creative process… as the process took place, it created a brief storyline, hence the title.”

What have been some different reactions to Long Story Short?

Overall I’d say people received it pretty well…majority of the people I speak to about it tell me it’s a dope project/well thought out…the only complaint was in reference to duration…and I’m cool with that cause it was strategic…going into the project I said to self, depending on the feedback there could be a Long Story Short pt. 2…

Do you think you have a perfect album in you? What do you think it’s going to take to get the perfect album out of you?

A perfect album?! that’s outlandish lol but I definitely feel like I can put a dope album together…all a nigga really need is the right beats/real life experiences for content purposes…I think that’s a healthy recipe to cook something lovely!

How do you feel your father’s experience in the business has helped and/or hindered yours?

My pops being involved in the industry kinda created somewhat of a double edged sword…learned so much from observing him & how he maneuvers yet I gotta work twelve times harder cause he’s not giving out anything free…he had to put in work to get to where he’s at and so do I…it kills me when people think he’s the brains behind this operation like naa I’m still tryna figure it out on my own so to speak champ…no complaints though…Show & Prove Shorts is what they call me lol

What do you think is the biggest obstacle facing young black teenagers today and why?

Lack of awareness…but that’s not jus black teens that’s people in general…people become stagnant cause they’re simply unaware of what’s going on around them…they say insanity is doing the same thing routinely expecting different results…on a whole people are literally insane cause they jus aren’t aware.

Name three artists you’d collaborate with on your dream album and why?

I’d love to go back & forth with Jadakiss on a joint…I think that would be dope like how him & Styles P do it…a female track with Fabolous like some shit jus full of game and could be in talks for one of the smoothest tracks ever would have me gassed lol…and a song with Kendrick then after we’re done recording he tells me “Shorts, you got me on that one” that album would have no choice but to be silly!

As the collective attention span shrinks, Eddie Canyon finds himself searching for meaning within the noise. Reaching into and around his Arkansas roots, Eddie carves a distinctively southern Hip Hop undercurrent in his exploratory approach to music. Weaving tales of battling addiction, thoughts on spirituality, and irreverent social commentary into his lyrics, Eddie aims to intrigue his audience at the least, and at most, leave them with a liberating degree of thoughtfulness. In his own words: “The Matrix is real, but there’s a way out.” Support on Spotify or Bandcamp.
