Singer-Songwriter David Jane Blends Bittersweet Romanticism with Urgent Energy on New Single “Story of a Night”

by Leslie Sherman October 6, 2025 9:52 am Tagged With: singer, songwriter

Toronto-based singer-songwriter and filmmaker David Jane returns with his most riveting single yet, “Story of a Night.” Building on the nostalgic introspection of his recent singles, the track delivers a quick, impassioned burst of romantic memory and unresolved longing. At under three minutes, it’s a whirlwind of pleading energy that ends abruptly, leaving listeners with the same insatiable craving that defines its subject matter.

Following “Garden Out Back” and “Five and Dime,” which explored grief, nostalgia, and dissociation, “Story of a Night” leans into both romanticism and bitterness. It asks the haunting question: if something was truly that good, how can life continue as if it never happened? Was it ever real, or just a story imagined?

Despite being David’s shortest release to date, the track was years in the making. The chorus first emerged in May 2023, but the lyrics weren’t completed until January 2025 with revisions still happening during studio takes. “Usually, if a song takes that long to get right I figure it’s not meant to be and move on, but every time I tried to let go I found myself haunted by that chorus,” David reflects. “I always knew what I wanted to say, it just took me stepping away and taking my time to find the kind of objective, omniscient perspective I needed to say it.”

Produced in collaboration with Sam Arion (Mute Choir), the song embodies David’s signature push-and-pull between minimalist instrumentation and rich, layered production. From the subtle “Viva La Vida”-style chugging guitar in the second verse to the soaring, hidden electric guitar in the bridge, the track is full of sonic details that reveal themselves only upon closer listening. “If we got it right, as I think we did, you wouldn’t even notice it unless someone pointed it out – you’d just feel it,” David says.
