SYBS Delivers Cross-Cultural Sonic Experience on Newest Single/Video Motivation

SYBS

If you’ve been reading my writing for any length of time, you are aware of how much I appreciate a great story that stands as a foundation for artistic expression…specifically in music. SYBS have such a story and their newest single Motivation is that much more potent because of it.

SYBS is a culture crossing, world traveling sonic experience. Members Yugy and Dobi are siblings of Nigerian descent who spend their time bouncing from London to New York to Los Angeles. The duo’s music blends African rhythms with elements of 90’s Hip Hop/R&B and 80’s pop for a very distinct sound one might classify as “world pop” or the more organic sounding “tribal pop” label.

Now to the story…

Video co-star Reese Scott worked for nearly two decades as Creative Director for a publishing company but switched gears in order to start the Women’s World of Boxing. That was in 2007 and the goal was to offer women a safe and uplifting environment. Through this process, Reese developed inner-strength, found more confidence in herself and went on to lose 70 pounds along the way.

Also starring in the video is Coss Marte, who was arrested at 19 years of age. His charge? Serving as kingpin of a drug empire that was valued at over $2 million. During his seven years in prison, Coss lost 70 pounds within six months and inspired other inmates to improve their own health by training them in his methods. After he was back in the free world, Coss started ConBody which uses ex-cons to deliver his prison-style workout to members of New York based gym. The classes are livestreamed.

Motivation is an upbeat track featuring driving bass, a rhythm reminiscent of infectious 80’s pop jams, a R&B-tinged vocal performance from Dobi, and the confident delivery of Yugy’s flow. Before Yugy’s rap enters the track, there is a tribal rhythm breakdown which leads the transition from a heavy 80’s pop influence to a more 90’s Hip Hop infused vibe before coming full circle for the final hook to bring it all back together.

Motivation truly stands in a sonic lane all it’s own.
