War Poets Spread Messages Through Stories

by Joshua (J.Smo) Smotherman April 14, 2014 11:30 am Tagged With: adult contemporary, Americana, Pop, Rock

Dulce et Decorum Est by War Poets Minneapolis based pop-rock outfit, War Poets, have infiltrated the music scene with their uncompromising approach to standing for social justice through catchy, thought provoking music that carries necessary messages.

“The songs we write have messages, but we like to pass these on in stories so they’re more relatable,” says Rex Haberman, the band’s primary creative force.

Bob Dylan’s fiery spirit, Tom Petty’s smooth sounds, Springsteen’s appeal to the average person, and Fleetwood Mac’s masculine/feminine dynamic all converge into the creative talents and musical aura of War Poets.

In just 14 months, the lead single “Close Enough” received 250,000+ video views. Dedicated to marriage equality and the memory of the NYC Stonewall Uprisings, the track became an anthem for many same-sex couples as well as supporters of the marriage equality movement.

“The most fulfilling moment of it all might be when we played ‘Close Enough’ during our CD release party. There were all these people I’ve never seen before so into that song,” Haberman says, pausing thoughtfully. “As a heterosexual male, making that connection that we have different orientations but I still care for you, respect you, and love you as another human being. That was a great moment.”

Their album, Dulce et Decorum Est, has the distinction of being the #1 most played album on KSJS in San Jose. The music has also earned them several TV and film licensing spots. They have appeared on the Red Gorilla stage at SXSW and have worked with Grammy-winning producer Kevin Bowe and 5-time Grammy winner Joe Baldridge.

In other words, they stay busy.

War Poets consists of a core duo – Rex Haberman and Jenny Case. Jenny acts as vocalist/bassist, contributing songwriter, and musical director while Rex handles duties as singer, songwriter, and guitarist. Jenny is currently the executive director of the She Rock She Rock Foundation. Both have extensive resumes prior to War Poets.

War Poets deliver powerful messages through stories that the average, everyday person can relate to. It’s potent but smooth. Listen and let your mind wander.
