“You Gotta Live to See” Cole Mize

by C Bret Campbell March 7, 2014 1:04 pm

gottalivetoseealbumartIf you have been paying attention, you know it’s been a while since I personally penned a hip-hop review. There’s a reason for that. Most of it sucks. This has really been prominent in my mind as I check out the so-called “artists” on the 2014 Bonnaroo line-up… it’s a shame that some people call that crap music. So let me get to the point.

Cole Mize sent over his latest, “You Gotta Live to See,” the other day and went about it in such a way that interested me in his personality. Read that sentence again if you are a music promoter.

After a couple conversations and reading a bit on his blog, I was actually excited to hear this track! Im’a break it down for ya.

2 Complaints:

  • “Uh, Yeah”… c’mon gimme a break…
  • A little more passion in the delivery would be nice.

Kudos

Cole is not afraid to speak his mind and testify his faith! That goes a long long way in my book.

Well written and cleanly delivered raps and rhymes that actually have a point tell a story through “You Gotta Live to See” about a young woman dealing with depression and suicidal tendencies. Mize advises that we have to live through our struggles to see the beauty that is life in the outcome.

Catching me on a “down” kind of morning, this rapper opened my mind today and helped me smile, knowing that I’m not alone and that there is hope!

Mize has an ability with words that most simply don’t have. He’s been working at it for a long time and it’s paid off. There are a lot of mc’s out there that could take a lyrical lesson or two from Cole Mize.

More about Cole Mize on Mid Tenn Listens

Cole Mize sounds like Eminem born in the dirty south with country grammar, raised on grits and southern hospitality but beaten by the bible belt while finding a friend in Jesus. Known for his complex rhyme schemes and ability to adapt to each song in a unique and artistic way, Cole’s versatility causes him to stand out like a sore thumb among his colleagues.

As the collective attention span shrinks, Eddie Canyon finds himself searching for meaning within the noise. Reaching into and around his Arkansas roots, Eddie carves a distinctively southern Hip Hop undercurrent in his exploratory approach to music. Weaving tales of battling addiction, thoughts on spirituality, and irreverent social commentary into his lyrics, Eddie aims to intrigue his audience at the least, and at most, leave them with a liberating degree of thoughtfulness. In his own words: “The Matrix is real, but there’s a way out.” Support on Spotify or Bandcamp.
