At first glance, or perhaps first listen, you might be tempted to file Apropos’s latest single, “10th Floor,” alongside the growing wave of artists reviving classic soul through a contemporary R&B lens. Warm keys, smooth grooves, expressive vocals … the familiar ingredients are all there. But spend a little longer in its company, and something more interesting begins to emerge.
This isn’t simply an exercise in nostalgia, nor is it an attempt to modernise vintage soul for a new audience. Instead, Apropos creates a space where the two ideas exist comfortably together, allowing classic songwriting instincts and contemporary production to complement one another.
Lyrically, the song is built around an idea most people instinctively understand. We don’t always remember every conversation or every detail of a relationship, but we rarely forget the places where those moments happened.
It could be a room, a view or a familiar doorway. They all become emotional landmarks long after the memories themselves begin to blur. Apropos captures that feeling with clarity, describing “10th Floor” as “a soundtrack for modern love, steeped in vintage soul,” where the simple act of closing a door becomes an invitation to leave the rest of the world outside.
That same sense of intimacy defines the music itself. It gives the song an effortless quality, one that feels equally at home soundtracking a late-night drive through the city as it does a slow Sunday morning shared with someone close.
Perhaps that’s where Apropos distinguishes himself most. Plenty of artists wear their influences proudly, but few absorb them quite so naturally. Echoes of Marvin Gaye, classic Motown craftsmanship, gospel, and modern alternative R&B all drift through without ever becoming obvious reference points. They simply become part of a much larger musical conversation.
If “10th Floor” suggests anything about where Apropos is heading, it’s that he’s less interested in revisiting soul music than continuing its story. His songs understand the genre’s traditions, embrace contemporary production, and never lose sight of the emotion that made soul music resonate in the first place.
Sometimes the most memorable songs aren’t the loudest ones. Sometimes they simply invite you inside, close the door behind you, and remind you that the quietest moments often leave the deepest impression.
